COLUMBIANA CORNER Salem City Council honors Weingart for 50 years on job
Salem City Council recently recognized Don Weingart, utilities superintendent, for 50 years of service to the city.
Weingart, known for his quiet, professional manner, has spent nearly 20 of those 50 years as utilities superintendent.
As council thanked and congratulated Weingart, Councilman Steve Andres, D-2nd, offered some perspective on the length of time Weingart has served.
Andres said he was born in 1952 -- the same year Weingart started working for the city.
Questions, please: After his introduction at a press conference at Mount Union College last week, Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu, the Anglican archbishop most known for his fight against apartheid in his native and now democratic South Africa, said he would make no additional comments and instead took questions.
"At press conferences, reporters are never listening to the introduction," he said. "They are thinking about the questions they're hoping to ask. So, here I am, a sacrificial lamb at the slaughter."
