Black American youth is topic of conference

YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University Chapter of the NAACP and the Africana Studies Program are sponsoring a four-part conference with the theme "It Takes a Village" on issues facing black American youth from Monday through Thursday.
Responsibilities of education is the Monday topic. Ben McGee, superintendent of Youngstown City Schools, is scheduled to speak at the event.
A poetry reading competition for high school and college students will be Tuesday.
Winners in each age group win $50 and $100, respectively. The poetry group Nu Urban Soul Essentials is special guest.
The conference's final two days explore religious, political and community responsibilities. Guest speakers on Thursday include LaCheryl Tucker, weekend anchor for WYTV Channel 33 News, and Kenneth King, news director for WRPB-FM and WGFT-AM Radio.
All conferences will be in the university's Kilcawley Center. Events are scheduled to run from 1 to 5 p.m. except on Tuesday, when the time is slated for 8:30 to 10 p.m.
