CAMPBELL -- Spurred by a mild winter, construction is far ahead of schedule at the new high school, which is being built adjacent to the existing one.
Work is also proceeding quickly at the new kindergarten-through-eighth-grade building under construction on state Route 616, Superintendent James Ciccolelli has told the board of education.
At the K-8 building, where construction is about one month ahead of schedule, work is to be completed in July with an early August occupancy date, he said Tuesday. In the fall, after the new building opens, Penhale Elementary School and Reed Middle School will be demolished.
The move into the new high school, where construction is running about three months ahead of schedule, will likely begin in late October, he said. The existing high school classroom building will then be demolished next winter, Ciccolelli said. Installation of exhaust fans and temporary walls has curtailed dust caused by renovation of the high school field house, he said.
2002-03 calendar: The board adopted next year's school calendar, which calls for teachers to report Aug. 28 and classes to begin Sept. 3, which Ciccolelli said would allow enough time to move into the new K-8 building. Classes will end June 9, and the last day for teachers will be June 10, 2003.
The board renewed for one year the contracts of Kathleen Yeloushan as K-8 principal and of Bruce Palmer, this year's middle school principal, who will be grades 5-8 principal next school year. It also established a maintenance supervisor's position and joined the state cooperative purchasing program.
