Ohio Emergency Management Agency classifies a tornado as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Other facts:
The average tornado moves from southwest to northeast but can move in any direction.Tornadoes average a forward speed of 30 mph but can move up to 70 mph.Ohio's peak tornado season is April through July, but tornadoes occur throughout the year.Tornadoes mostly occur between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.
This data shows tornadoes recorded in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys from 1950 to 2001:
Trumbull County: 13 tornadoes, three of them F3-F5 class.Mahoning County: 14 tornadoes, two of them F3-F5 class.Columbiana County: 15 tornadoes, one of them F3-F5 class.Mercer County: 12 tornadoes, two of them F3-F5 class.Lawrence County: 10 tornadoes, class not available.F0-F2 Class: 42 to 157 mph winds with light to considerable damage.F3-F5 Class: 158 to 300+ mph winds with light to incredible damage.
