Violinist to perform
SHARON, Pa. -- Violinist Calvin Lewis will perform in the final program of the Lenten Meditation-Recital series at noon Tuesday in St. John's Episcopal Church, 226 W. State St. Lewis is a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Music and serves as concertmaster of the Youngstown Symphony. He performs with the West Virginia and Wheeling symphony orchestras and with the Pittsburgh Opera. He is also a member of the Youngstown Symphony String Quartet. A light lunch will be served in the Parish House afterward.
Screenings for veterans
BUTLER, Pa. -- The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 325 New Castle Road, is providing free health screenings for veterans during the monthly health fair/enrollment clinics to be held at the medical center auditorium from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. The yearly enrollment with the VA and six-month health care screenings are strongly encouraged for all veterans. Testing available includes oral cancer screening, blood pressure, blood screening, pneumonia vaccine and cardiovascular risk screenings. Appointments are not necessary. American Legion event
SHARON, Pa. -- Nikki Mendicino, a 12-year-old from Springdale, Pa., will be a featured guest at the Sharon American Legion Post 299's 83rd annual Legion Birthday and Past Commanders Dinner Thursday. Gerald Zorn, the next American Legion Department Commander for the state, will be the guest speaker. The program begins at 6 p.m. at the post home at 1395 E. State St. and is open to the public. Mendicino, noted for her speeches on veterans' issues, has spoken at the Rolling Thunder program at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., for the past two years and was on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" on Memorial Day 2001. She has been awarded the Pennsylvania Medal of Commendation and is an honorary member of Tarentum VFW Post 5758, Mercer County Vietnam Era Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of Pittsburgh, Somerset County Vietnam Veterans Association and the National Chapter of Rolling Thunder.
