YOUNGSTOWN -- A 12-year-old boy has been injured by a stray bullet in one of three separate city shootings.
The Sheridan Elementary School pupil was in satisfactory condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his right thigh, according to police and hospital personnel.
His stepfather told city police they were walking on Glenwood Avenue toward the Big A store at Sherwood Avenue on the city's South Side around 11 p.m. Thursday when he saw three men in the parking lot acting suspiciously. He said it appeared as if there was a confrontation, so he and the boy turned down Sherwood to avoid the men. They then heard gunshots and the boy fell with a wound to his leg.
Police found 10 shell casings in the parking lot.
Earlier in the day, around 5 a.m., a 43-year-old East Side man reported that someone had fired gunshots toward his Berwick Avenue home, city police reports show. He said he was sleeping on the couch when he heard the gunshots. He saw four men firing, he said.
Also on Thursday, a 24-year-old South Side woman said her live-in boyfriend, also 24, had fired shots at her sister during an argument at the Myrtle Avenue home around 10:50 p.m., reports show. She told city police the sister fled and she tried to grab her boyfriend, but he struck her twice in the head with the butt of the handgun. The second time, the gun fired.
