YOUNGSTOWN Homeless man charged with begging
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a homeless man who has a 23-page police record Tuesday evening after he asked an officer for money.
Thomas W. Trevathan, 48, has been arrested on charges of begging in the past and had been issued a summons for begging at Youngstown State University just hours before.
Police said the man approached an officer on Commerce Street between Wick Avenue and Champion Street just after 8 p.m.
After being told that he was not going to be given any money, the man approached patrons of BW-3 in front of the restaurant. An employee there asked the man to leave. The restaurant employee later told police that the panhandling has been an ongoing nuisance.
After leaving the BW-3 parking area, the man stationed himself at the entrance of the parking deck near the YMCA, stopping cars and asking drivers for money.
Police issued the man a ticket accusing him of begging. Officers tried to have him locked up, but Mahoning County jail would not accept him.
The man has at least six warrants for not showing up for court on charges of begging and is a suspect in a break-in at a downtown law office.
