HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Mahoning Township will advertise for bids for several improvements, including new roofs for the community building, the three pavilions at the township park and the swimming pool building.
They also advertise for a new dishwasher, stove, floor tiles, tables and chairs and carpeting for the main floor of the community building.
Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo said all the roofs are leaking. Cost of the improvements will not be known until the bids are received. Supervisors may seek grants.
Hearing set: Supervisors announced a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. April 9, just before the next regular supervisors meeting, on a proposed zone change which would allow retail sales in industrial park zoning districts.
Supervisor Poncho Exposito said three businesses are considering locating in the township, but would be hampered by the prohibition against retail sales in industrial parks.
Solicitor Tom Leslie provided supervisors with an opinion on another zoning matter, a question of whether a retail novelty fireworks store to be built on Martin Kelly Spears Road by Supervisor Vito Yeropoli violates the zoning ordinance.
Leslie said the minimum-lot size requirement for all uses at the site is five acres unless modified. However, another section of the ordinance requires a 25-acre lot size if the use is storage and warehousing of explosives.
Leslie said his legal opinion is that the five-acre lot size is sufficient because Yeropoli's business is only a retail consumer fireworks establishment and that the ordinance requiring 25 acres is intended for production and storage of large quantities of commercial explosives.
Yeropoli said after the meeting his store will sell only novelties, such as party poppers and sparklers. He said he hopes to have his building completed by the end of May.
Yeropoli also plans to relocate his vending business from U.S. Route 224 to the new building.
Approvals: The subdivision for Yeropoli's business was approved Tuesday, along with several others which all were given a favorable recommendation by the township planning commission.
Supervisors received notification from IA Construction Corporation of Zelienople that it will start resurfacing a portion of U.S. Route 224 soon and expects to be finished by Aug. 16.
During the work, the highway will have single-lane traffic.
Supervisors also are looking for a new community center director to replace Ida Chiaro, who is leaving. The job description will be posted at township offices. The director opens and closes the center for rentals, cleans it and does other township jobs.
The post pays $235 per month.
Supervisors also agreed on a list of names for lanes in township trailer parks in conjunction with the Emergency 911 street naming.
