Jail inmate dies
WARREN -- A 23-year-old Trumbull County Jail inmate was found dead Monday, but officials say they don't suspect wrongdoing. Chief Deputy Ernie Cook said officials are awaiting a coroner's ruling to determine a cause of death for Robert A. Edwards, 253 Washington St. N.E.
The county sheriff's department will conduct an internal investigation and wait for results of a toxicology test, Cook said. Officials say Edwards went to sleep Sunday night and was found dead when jail personnel tried to wake him for breakfast. Cook explained Edwards was not in a cell when he died but rather in an open area under the supervision of two corrections officers.
Authorities tried to revive him with shock paddles, Cook said, and added there was nothing on Edwards' medical screening papers to indicate any serious illness. Edwards was being held on a warrant from Warren police for charges of squealing tires and driving under suspension.
Assault during game
SHARON, Pa . -- Nathan Sample, 19, of Hazelton Street, Masury, was freed on his own recognizance after his arraignment on charges of assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct. Police said Sample turned himself in around 1 p.m. Monday after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Police said Sample apparently became enraged at a referee's call during a sixth-grade basketball game between Brookfield and Notre Dame students at St. Michael's School in Sharon on Feb. 23. Sample is accused of going onto the court during the game and assaulting the referee, pushing him into the stands. Police were called to the scene but Sample left before they got there. The referee wasn't hurt, police said.
