DIVISION II
Who: Poland (21-2) vs. Canton South (22-1).
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Where: Canton Civic Center.
If you go: Take State route 62 to Canton to State route 43. Turn left onto Route 43 (Market Avenue) and travel 2 miles. Civic Center and parking deck entrance are on the right.
Notebook: Poland coach Ken Krisdale won his school's first district title in his nine years at the helm by defeating Niles 57-52 Saturday in Boardman. The Bulldogs finished 12-0 against Metro Athletic Conference teams. Freshman Chad Fender scored 18 points in the district final. Senior Jamie Dunn, last year's MAC player of the year, contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Other key players are Lou Davanzo, Eric Fender, Neil Harris, David McGarry and Bill Bartos. Canton South advanced to the regional by defeating Minerva, 49-46. Their other tournament victories were against Navarre Fairless and Canton Central Catholic. Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Poland/Canton South winner will play the winner of the Akron East (11-9)/Hunting Valley University (16-7) game.
DIVISION III
Who: Badger (20-3) vs. Loudonville (20-2).
When: 8 p.m. Thursday.
Where: Canton Fieldhouse.
If you go: Take State route 62 to Canton to the Fulton Road exit. Follow Fulton Road past the Pro Football Hall of Fame to McKinley High School parking lot.
Notebook: After scoring just four points in the first quarter, the second-seeded Badgers won their first district title in 20 years when they rallied to defeat Warren JFK, 55-50, last Friday at Hubbard. Senior Ryan Miller (6-0) led the Badgers with 17 points. Senior Josh Upshire (6-1) scored 12 points and junior reserve Mitch Logan (6-1) contributed 10. Other key players are Brett Bell (6-0 senior), Josh Klingensmith (6-2 senior), Chris Arnold (6-1 senior) and Tyler Bonar (6-0 junior). Loudonville advanced to the regional with a 65-62 overtime victory over Akron Manchester. Their starting lineup has: Brian Allerdine, 6-2 senior, 10 points a game; Kevin Davis 5-11 junior, eight points; Andy VanHorn, 5-11, junior; Darrin Kanc, 6-2 senior; and Dan Huffman, 5-10 senior. Saturday at 3 p.m., the Badger/Loudonville winner will take on the winner of the Cleveland Central Catholic (18-5)/Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas (16-7) game.
DIVISION IV
Who: Bristol (22-1) vs. Sebring McKinley (20-3).
When: 8 p.m. today.
Where: Canton Fieldhouse.
Notebook: The Panthers overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Windham in Friday's Middlefield district finale. Junior Craig Giesy scored 37 points, including Bristol's final 14 points that included 12 free throws. Bristol senior guard John King, the Northeast Inland District player of the year, added 12 points. The Panthers' only other regional appearance came in 1994 when they advanced to the state semifinals. Sebring sophomore David Scarpitti scored the winning points in Friday's 54-52 victory over Mineral Ridge in the Struthers district finale. Scarpitti finished with 12 points and Josh Dean added 14. Greg VanKirk had 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Bristol/Sebring winner will play the winner of the Dalton (21-3)/Strasburg-Franklin (18-6) game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
