PITTSBURGH -- The Andy Warhol Museum will present the exhibition "The LP Show" June 16 through Aug. 18. Organized by New York's Exit Art Gallery and curated by Paper magazine's Carlo McCormick, the exhibition will feature an eclectic assemblage of more than 2,000 LP album covers gathered from nearly 50 collections.
Before MP3s and CDs, vinyl record albums were wrapped in paper and inserted into cardboard sleeves. In 1939, a young graphic designer at Columbia Records named Alex Steinweiss recognized the packaging potential that married art and music.
The exhibition will trace the history of album cover design from the 1940s to contemporary graphics that adorn compact discs. The show will feature everything from Christian ventriloquists to clowns, couples, aliens and monochromes.
The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $4 for students.
