Calling contest
The first annual Thundering Toms of Trumbull County National Wild Turkey Federation-sanctioned wild turkey calling contest was held recently at the Erie Dearie Sportsman's Expo in Niles.
Winners were: Jakes, ages up to 15: 1st, Cory Hoone, Smithfield, Pa.; 2nd, Kirstine Hays, Atlantic, Pa., and 3rd, Dylan Wright, Warren.; intermediate, ages 16 through 20: 1st, Tony Iesue from Harbor Creek, Pa.; 2nd, Travis Bowman, Glouster, Ohio, and 3rd, Adam O'Dell, Enterprise, W.Va.; open division, all ages and skill levels: 1st, Don O'Dell, Titusville, Pa., 2nd, Brett Berry, Bristolville, Ohio and 3rd, Owen Zellefrow, Harbor Creek, Pa.
First place winners 21 and older in the open division are now eligible to compete in the Senior Grand National Wild Turkey Calling Championships to be held at the NWTF National Convention.
JAKES day set
The Thundering Toms of Trumbull County will hold their 2nd annual Jakes day in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife District Three office early youth Turkey Hunt drawing at the district's building on North Park Avenue in North Bloomfield on April 6.
Youth under 17 are invited to join the program and participate in an educational seminar before the drawing for the early youth season, for hunts to be held in the Mosquito Wildlife Refuge.
Seminar activities will include: safe shotgun handling; safe hunting practices; range estimation; a BB gun shoot; turkey calling; and sessions by the ODNR and the Ohio Trappers Association. Lunch will be served to those registered to attend.
A "DART' simulator sponsored by the Trumbull County Federation of Sportsmen and supplied by Glenn's Archery from Columbiana will be available to let the JAKES experience the feel of a turkey hunt.
Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. with activities from 9 a.m. to noon.
Youth hunt drawing registration will immediately follow. Proof of completion of a hunter safety course is required for registration for the drawing.

Fishing forum slated
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will present a program on efforts to "Keep Pennsylvania Fishing" at a sportsmen's forum on March 14 from 7-9 p.m. at the Cranberry Elks, 20720 Route 19, Cranberry Township, Pa.

Outdoors show to open
The Cleveland Sport, Travel and Outdoor Show at the IX Center in Cleveland will open its doors Saturday and run through March 24.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and March 24, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 17, 3:30-9:30 p.m. March 18, 19, 21 and 22, noon to 9:30 p.m. March 20, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 24.
