MEADVILLE, PA. Adult camp to improve technique

MEADVILLE, Pa. --The Band Camp for Adult Musicians, founded by John Fleming at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1989, has found a new home at Allegheny College.
"Allegheny's picturesque landscape is an ideal backdrop for a week of festive music-making that will allow participants to improve their instrument skills, perform concert band repertoire and form life-long relationships," says John Fleming, director of the camp, which benefits woodwind, brass and percussion musicians
The adult band camp will be offered twice in 2002: June 9 to 15, and June 23 to 29. The camp will include classes in music theory, conducting and jazz improvisation as well as master classes in the musicians' chosen instruments.
Participants will also rehearse and perform in small ensembles such as Woodwind Quintet, Dixieland Band and German European Ragtime Band.
Distinguished faculty will work closely with participants to improve their instrumental technique and musicianship.
Performances: The Band Camp for Adult Musicians will conclude with public performances on June 14 and 28.
The concert band will be conducted by Commander Allen E. Beck, retired director of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Academy Bands. A member of the board of directors of the John Philip Sousa Foundation and a member of the American Bandmasters Association, Commander Beck has appeared as a conductor throughout the United States as well as numerous other countries.
