ALIQUIPPA, Pa. -- A Negley, Ohio, man is dead after his car crashed into the rear of a refuse truck on Pa. Route 60 in Hopewell Township, Beaver County. Pennsylvania State Police said Matthew P. Jesensky, 33, of Richardson Avenue, was killed on impact as his 1988 Ford Mustang crashed into the back of the Mack truck owned by Waste Management Inc. at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday. Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call police at (724) 773-7400.
United board fills seat
HANOVERTON -- United Board of Education chose John Zehentbauer of Hanoverton from among six applicants to fill a vacant board seat. Superintendent Glenn Willis said Zehentbauer, a supervisor at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, replaces, William Baker, who was elected to the board in November and died Feb. 20.
Historical re-enactor
MERCER, Pa. -- The Underground Railroad and Abolitionist Era Discussion Group will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, March 11, for a potluck dinner and discussion.
The meeting will be at Southwest Gardens, 500 Darr Avenue, Farrell, and will feature Daisybelle Thomas-Quinney as guest speaker. Thomas-Quinney, a re-enactor of black historical figures such as Harriet Tubman, Mary McCloed Bethune, Fannie Lou Hamer and Sojourner Truth, will discuss the creation of living history personas.

Man is sentenced
MERCER, Pa. -- Franklin Royster, 23, formerly of Keysville, Pa., and now of the Mercer County Jail, was sentenced Thursday in Common Pleas court to six months to two years less one day for criminal trespassing, a felony.
Judge Francis Fornelli imposed the sentence on Royster for entering a residence on Malleable Street, Sharon, last Sept. 14, and stealing a television, videocassette recorder, computer, printer, stereo system, cordless phone, answering machine and caller identification box.
Home is burglarized
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Jewelry, a shotgun and a DVD player were taken from a Warren Avenue home. City police said someone entered between 9 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. Thursday while the owners were gone. Among the items taken were three diamond rings, a safety deposit box and other jewelry.
Break-in attempt fails
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said a would-be burglar was apparently injured trying to break into a home in the 1300 block of George Street Extension. Someone smashed a window at the back of the house between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday and got severely cut in the process, police said. There was a lot of blood on the ground and police followed the blood trail along George Street into Sharon but lost it there. The home was not entered. Police said the owner was home but didn't hear the window being broken.
Sex-crime case
WARREN -- A 62-year-old Brookfield man wants the court to dismiss his conviction on five counts of sexual battery and one count of corruption of a minor.
Atty. Dan Keating, who represents Robert Gibson of Albright-McKay Road, filed the motions this week stating there is no physical evidence to support the charges.
If the convictions are not dismissed, then Keating wants a new trial for Gibson.
Judge John Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court will rule on the motions in the next few weeks.
Gibson was convicted last month of charges that he had sexual contact with a teen-age girl he knows.
Woman shot in home
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 50-year-old South Side woman was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning after being shot by one of six men who entered her East Judson Avenue home, according to city police and hospital personnel.
Three boys, ages 1, 9 and 11, were in the home when there was a knock at the door at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The oldest boy answered the door and a man pointed a gun at him. Six men entered the house, yelling, asking for "the money" and searching the house before the gunman shot the woman in the leg.
The boys' mother, who also lives at the home, had left shortly before the shooting. She said several people knew she had recently received money in a property insurance settlement.
