Grand jury indicts man on obscenity charges

Authorities say he downloaded and saved child pornography.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Lowellville man, indicted on sex charges two years ago, was indicted again Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury.
Anthony Panici, 34, of West Wood Street, faces six counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor. He is a former head football coach at Lowellville High School.
Deena Calabrese, assistant prosecutor, said the charges stem from an investigation that continued after Panici was indicted in December 2000 on five counts of sexual battery.
Seized computer: Authorities seized Panici's home computer in April 2000 to monitor his e-mail before the original indictment. Further investigation showed that Panici had downloaded and saved pictures of child pornography. Each count is for a separate picture. Each child shown is under age 8, Calabrese said.
She said Panici is not accused of disseminating or showing the pictures to others.
"He just had it in his possession," she said.
Panici's attorney, Dennis DiMartino, could not be reached to comment.
The charges lodged under the original indictment are still pending and set for trial March 20 before Judge Maureen A. Cronin of common pleas court.
