YOUNGSTOWN -- The police department's juvenile division is seeking the public's help in locating a 16-year-old West Side girl who has been missing since Feb. 26.
Lindsey Hawn of Oneta Street left home for Chaney High School about 7:55 a.m. that morning. Her father said he received a call from a school employee later that day saying she had not arrived. They said an unidentified male had called the school to report that she would be absent.
Detective Sgt. Sam Scott said she is about 5 feet 3 inches tall and 110 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. When she left home, she was wearing black pants, a white shirt, a blue coat and black shoes.
Anyone with information about Lindsey's whereabouts is asked to call Scott at (330) 742-8960 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outside those hours, call the police department at (330) 742-8900.
Romeo to leave post
CAMPBELL -- Vince Romeo, the city's superintendent of water works, announced he is leaving Friday for a job with the Warren Water Department. Romeo spent 12 years with the water works, two of them as superintendent.
Romeo was applauded Wednesday by city council and city officials for his efforts at the plant, such as bringing in students for educational tours.
George Ginnis, 31, of Campbell, will replace him. Ginnis has 11 years' experience at the city plant and is scheduled to make $39,000 a year.
Pupil punches teacher
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 37-year-old Hayes Middle School teacher was punched in the chest by a 15-year-old student after she broke up a fight between the girl and a boy in the school cafeteria.
The teacher told police that the two pupils were pushing a table into each other at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. She stopped them and was escorting the girl out of the cafeteria when the girl punched her. The girl, an eighth-grader, was suspended for seven days by the school principal, who will recommend expulsion, police said.
Pupil reports assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 12-year-old Hayes Middle School pupil reported to city police that she was assaulted by a teacher last week. The girl's stepfather made the report earlier this week after he was informed of the matter, police said.
The stepfather said the girl was leaving a room at the end of class about 3 p.m. Friday and had words with the teacher when he knocked books from her hands and grabbed her by the shoulder to pull her back into the room.
Blast damages home
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police continue their investigation into an explosion that damaged a South Side home.
Bomb squad personnel were called when city police found about six M-1000 fireworks on the lawn of a 55-year-old Hilton Avenue woman.
She reported that she heard a loud explosion about 3:10 a.m. Wednesday before four front windows and a glass porch door were shattered, police reports show. The woman told police her son, who has since moved from the home, received threatening phone calls there in January. The home's siding and a drain spout also were damaged.
Jury indicts 2 men
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted a McDonald man and an Austintown man on cocaine charges.
Michael Green, 21, of Carver-Niles Road, McDonald, and Jason Yuschak, 20, of Frostwood Avenue, Austintown, were charged with possessing with intent to distribute and conspiring to possess with intent to distribute more than a pound of cocaine.
Green also is charged with carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cleveland.
Maple sugaring program
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Registration continues for the Jennings Environmental Education Center's Maple Sugaring program for elementary school teachers and their pupils.
Call (724) 794-6011 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Fee is $1 per student.
Programs will be offered for grades one to six Tuesday through March 15. Each program lasts about 90 minutes.
