Fire destroys Unity Township home

UNITY -- More than 40 firefighters from five departments responded to a fire that destroyed the home of Leonard Black at 46424 Beaver Lake Road in Unity Township.
New Waterford Fire Chief Bryan Henderson said the fire started because of a problem with the home's coal furnace. He estimated the loss at $35,000. He said the home was insured.
Henderson said the fire began in the basement and quickly spread because of high winds Wednesday afternoon. He said the home was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived.
No one was home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Henderson said firefighters from New Waterford, Unity Township, East Palestine, Springfield Township and Columbiana responded about 3:10 p.m. and were on the scene about four hours.
He said Unity firefighters returned to the home about 11 p.m. because the fire rekindled, and they were on the scene until about 3 a.m. today.
