BROOKFIELD ODNR allows blasting to go on at quarry

Thursday, March 7, 2002

The Youngstown company has amended its plan.
BROOKFIELD -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is permitting blasting to resume at a Brookfield stone quarry.
Andy Ware, ODNR spokesman, said Wednesday that blasting at City Stone Products quarry, operated by Youngstown's City Aggregates & amp; Recycling Inc., can begin today.
On Feb. 7, the agency ordered the company to make amendments to its blasting plan. While that was being done, Ware said, explosions could not be detonated at the City Stone quarry.
ODNR had found that 11 of 20 blasts were not monitored by a seismograph at a gas-oil wellhead on the property as required.
Also, the weight of explosive charges had exceeded the maximum allowed by as much as 710 pounds.
Since the February order, Ware said, City Aggregates has worked with ODNR to amend the plan to bring it into compliance.
Wampum Hardware Co. of New Galilee, Pa., actually blasts the stone at the state Route 7 facility. The stone is crushed and used in construction.
Blasting resulted in complaints by Hubbard Township residents who live near the site.
They contend the blasting damaged their homes, but ODNR concluded the damage was not the result of blasting.
