North Jackson man killed in 6-vehicle crash
NORTH JACKSON -- Christopher Root, 39, of North Jackson was killed in a six-vehicle accident Tuesday morning on Interstate 80 near the Ohio Turnpike entrance.
Root was driving east when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit the side of a tractor-trailer driven by Dewey Caldwell of Columbiana at 10:50 a.m., the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Root then crossed the median, striking an oncoming vehicle driven by Gina Rekstis of Hubbard and then a tractor-trailer driven by Craig Rehrer of Brockway, Pa.
Two other westbound vehicles also were involved, driven by Barbara Lehnard and Jacquelyn Tarr, both of Boardman. Rekstis, Lehnard and Tarr were treated for injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Sewer-trouble deal
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's settlement on sewer issues with the U.S. Justice Department, Environmental Protection Agency and state of Ohio has been submitted to the U.S. District Court in Akron.
There is a 30-day public comment period before the court considers final approval.
The settlement calls for the city to spend about $12 million over the next six years to correct sewage overflows that happen during heavy rains.
The city also will pay a $60,000 fine.
The city had faced hundreds of millions of dollars in sewer work and fines.
Sewer rates will increase between 2 percent and 4 percent a year to pay for the work.
Assault alleged
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 32-year-old Austintown woman is alleging that 12 members of the security and nursing staffs at Forum Health Northside Medical Center assaulted her by pushing her against a wall, knocking her from a wheelchair and dragging her on a floor, city police reports show.
The woman told police the matter happened at about 3 p.m. Sunday while she was receiving treatment at the hospital.
She reported it at about 4:30 p.m. Monday from St. Elizabeth Health Center.
She had injuries on her upper arms and lower back.
The woman said her husband and small children are witnesses.
Northside spokeswoman Debora Bishop said hospital officials are aware of the complaint. She declined to comment further.
Teen sentenced
CANFIELD -- A North Briarcliff Drive teen has pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an arrest last August on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Douglas Suffolk, 18, was sentenced Monday in Mahoning County Court here and ordered to pay a $100 fine, $50 in court costs, and serve 12 months of nonreporting probation. He also was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence.
Suffolk was arrested about 1 p.m. Aug. 19 in a parking lot on West Main Street with two others. They were standing outside a pickup truck.
Police found rolling papers, a straw, three cans of beer, a silver scale and a silver mirror with suspected cocaine residue inside the truck. Police reports said Suffolk was the truck's driver.
