Truck spills mail onto I-680

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mail headed from the city to Steubenville fell onto Interstate 680 when a strap holding a mail cage inside a tractor-trailer broke.
Mike Elias, customer relations coordinator at the Youngstown post office, said postal employees were sent to comb the streets after the Monday incident and he is confident all mail was recovered. He said the mail was being carried by a trucking company that hauls mail between Cleveland and Youngstown for the U.S. Postal Service.
Mail in tubs is placed in cages measuring about 6 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet. About 10 to 12 cages were loaded and strapped in the truck. One dislodged, damaged a back door and fell through, with mail spilling onto the street.
The mail was all headed to Steubenville addresses with ZIP codes that begin with the numbers 439. No mail that was mailed in Youngstown on Monday was in the batch.
Elias said customers with concerns can reach him at (330) 740-8805.
