The grants will be used forprojects benefiting low- and moderate-income people.
SHARON, Pa. -- The city will tap its federal Community Development Block Grant to pave portions of two streets and replace the elevator at the municipal parking garage.
Unused housing rehabilitation funds totaling $250,010 from the 2000, 2001 and 2002 CDBG budgets will be used to do the work. City council approved the plan Thursday.
Rosette C. Fisher, city community development director, said $157,510 will be used to pave South Irvine Avenue from West State Street to Emmanuel Place and West Budd Street from the Shenango Valley Freeway to Irvine Avenue.
An additional $90,000 will be used to replace the elevator at the parking garage, Vine Avenue and Pitt Street, with one more accessible to handicapped users, she said.
Finally, $2,500 will be given to the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments to provide summer bus transportation for low-income children and adults from city housing complexes to the Chestnut Run Swim Beach on Shenango River Lake, she said.
The grants are to be used for projects benefiting low- and moderate-income people, and the majority of the residents in the targeted paving area fit that guideline.
Fisher said the elevator replacement is an eligible expense because it will provide a service to the handicapped.
