AUSTINTOWN Court cases

Saturday, June 29, 2002

Several people appeared before Judge David D'Apolito late this week in Mahoning County Court in Austintown, on various charges:
Mario Miller, 18, of Jefferson Court, Liberty, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of coercion and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with 30 days suspended. Police said Miller ordered two girls to perform sex acts on him at gunpoint.
He had been charged with felony kidnapping. Miller also will have to serve 12 months of reporting probation and pay a total of $150 in fines and court costs. He was ordered not to have contact with the girls or their families. A 15-year-old Austintown girl told police that Miller threatened to kill her and her 14-year-old friend, also of Austintown, on June 1 if they did not perform the sex acts near Fountain Square. Miller had been driving the girls home from a church festival.
John McMahon, 39, of Maureen Drive, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of telephone harassment and was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with seven days' credit for time served. He called 911 six times for no particular reason, police said.
He had been charged with felony disruption of a public service. McMahon will be eligible for early release if he participates in a rehabilitation program. Judge D'Apolito also ordered McMahon to pay court costs and serve 12 months' reporting probation after he's released. Police said McMahon was highly intoxicated when he made the calls June 20. They responded to each call and found no emergency.
David Brown, 32, of Cool Street, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to petty theft and was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 138 suspended and 22 days' credit for time served. Police said he ran from Santisi's IGA on Mahoning Avenue with several stolen steaks under his coat.
He will be eligible for early release once he pays the store back for the steaks. Miller also was ordered to serve 12 months nonreporting probation. The owner of the store told police he watched Brown run out of the store with the steaks June 5. Brown ran to a nearby motel, where he was later found by police. The steaks were in a motel room shower.
James McKinney Jr., 31, of Iddings Street, Warren, appeared in court on a domestic violence charge. No plea was accepted, as the charge is a felony. Police accused him of beating a dancer at Club 76 on Seventy-Six Drive. He also pleaded innocent to obstructing official business. D'Apolito set McKinney's bond at $11,000 and scheduled his next hearing for Monday. The dancer, who lives with McKinney, said McKinney wrestled her to the ground and hit her Tuesday at the club.
Raymond E. Wilson Jr., 23, of Garfield Avenue, Youngstown, appeared in court on a charge of receiving stolen property. No plea was accepted, as the charge is a felony. Police said he was a passenger in a stolen car that was involved in a chase. D'Apolito set Wilson's bond at $4,000 and scheduled his next hearing for July 8.
Police said they began chasing the car on state Route 11 early Wednesday. The car eventually stopped in Youngstown, and Wilson and the driver got out and ran. Wilson was later arrested west of Market Street by Youngstown police. The driver has not been found.
Royal McConahy, 26, of Calvin Street, Youngstown, pleaded innocent to assault. His next hearing was scheduled for Aug. 5. Police said he beat Don George, 26, of Niles in a Westchester Drive parking lot.
George was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for cuts on his face after the fight Monday night. George's girlfriend told police that McConahy, who is her ex-boyfriend, ran at her and George when they were in the parking lot. She said she then ran into an apartment and called 911. She returned to find George beaten and McConahy missing.
