GREENVILLE St. Paul Homes to spend $30 million on renovations
A new health center, expanded services and more apartments are on the list.
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- St. Paul Homes will spend $30 million over the next three years to improve and expand facilities for its residents.
The board of directors has given its approval to the largest expansion in St. Paul Homes' 135-year history.
St. Paul Homes is a licensed continuing care retirement community on Pa. Route 58 in West Salem Township just north of Greenville.
"The project goals are ambitious, but people are living longer and have greater medical needs," said G. Bryan Oros, executive director. "This building will address the needs of our most frail while giving them the best living experience that St. Paul Homes can provide."
The plan includes:
U Construction of a 168-bed health center that will include skilled nursing and intermediate care as well as expanded Alzheimer's and dementia care services.
U Renovation of the current health center into 80 private apartments for those wanting to live independently with personal care services available.
U Introduction of a dementia assisted-living program.
U Expansion of rehabilitation services including outpatient therapies.
U Permanent facilities for the SeniorFITness wellness program.
More privacy
The new health center will provide more privacy for residents in a residential environment and allow easy access to meals, activities and staff, said Terry Wheeler, board president.
The new center will be built next to the current building in order to share services such as dietary, purchasing, housekeeping and maintenance.
The old health center will be converted to studio and one-bedroom apartments where people can live independently but where personal care services can be easily provided, if needed.
Dementia assisted living will be the newest level of care at St. Paul Homes and will be offered in a 24-bed unit in the new health center.
Construction is set to begin in the fall with the new health center opening in 2004 and the renovation work completed in 2005.
St. Paul Homes was founded in 1867 as a home for Civil War orphans. It offers retirement housing options and health-care services. It has 58 cottages and 17 apartments on its campus and 40 private, assisted-living apartments at The Ridgewood in Hermitage.
