YOUNGSTOWN Teenager drowns in pool at party

There were about 20 young people present when the drowning occurred.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A youth group graduation party at the West Side home of the head of the Youngstown Area Urban League turned tragic late Thursday when a teenager drowned in the swimming pool.
The coroner's office is investigating the death of Keith Antwain Shaw, 17, no address given, who died at St. Elizabeth Health Center, according to a police report.
Atty. Ron Miller, Urban League executive director, said he was hosting a gathering at his home Thursday night in recognition of members of the Harambee youth group who had recently graduated from high school.
"There was a group of young people here," Miller said this morning. "There was an adult present with the group of young people who were in the pool. I was not personally present with them at that time, so I do not know what happened."
Miller said there were about 20 young people present when the drowning occurred.
A police report said Shaw was swimming with two other teenagers shortly before midnight.
The two other teens told police that they got out of pool after about three minutes and noticed Shaw was not with them. One of the teens then jumped back into the pool, found Shaw on the bottom and pulled him out, the police report said.
Miller said the deepest end of the pool is 8 feet.
Shaw was taken to St. Elizabeth, where he died. The police report also said there were no signs of foul play in the area of the swimming pool.
