Trustees award projectto Girard company
BOARDMAN -- Township trustees awarded the Maple Avenue safety upgrade project to Faust Construction of Girard at a cost of $103,000.
Faust Construction had come in with the lowest bid. Other bids came from Rhino Excavating and Milling of Girard and Joe Lofaro Concrete of Brookfield.
Road Superintendent Gary Dawson said Tuesday that officials expect that McCourt Construction Co. of Akron, which has been awarded the township's 2002 resurfacing program, would likely begin work July 22 and finish in mid-August. Cost of that program is $407,000.
Forty-one streets and the government complex parking lots will be paved.
Man robbed in home
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are searching for two men who forced their way into a West LaClede Avenue home and robbed a man at gunpoint.
The 31-year-old victim told police he heard a knock on his door at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, and when he started to open the door, two men wearing bandannas over their faces forced their way inside.
The first man forced the resident to the ground by pointing a small black handgun at him and told him, "If you move, I'm going to kill you."
The second man, who carried a pump-action shotgun with a laser sight, went into the bedroom and took jewelry, money and a gun.
The resident told police he pushed the first man's gun aside and ran out the back door. He said the two suspects fled through the same door and headed through nearby woods.
Officers brought in a canine unit to search the area and followed the suspects' tracks to a vacant home on Brentwood Avenue. Neither the property nor the men were located at the house.
Council raises police pay
POLAND -- Village council has raised the hourly pay of part-time police officers from $10.50 to $11, effective Sunday.
Council also passed an ordinance Tuesday, effective in 30 days, which allows cars to be parked on devil strips of curbless streets. The pavement must be less than 19 feet wide, a concrete, blacktop or gravel surface must be provided, and a $10 permit fee must be paid to the zoning office and the permit approved.
The ordinance bans parking on grass devil strips, said zoning inspector Richard Ames.
Drug charges
POLAND -- An 18-year-old resident offered drugs to an undercover federal Drug Enforcement Agency agent during the suspect's term of community service, police said.
Village police were informed that during the week of June 9, the suspect had offered suspected marijuana to another worker while performing community service instead of serving time on a vandalism charge.
The suspect was under surveillance when he advised an undercover agent that he could retrieve marijuana from his nearby home.
Upon a search Tuesday, police found two bags of suspected marijuana and other suspected drug paraphernalia. A suspected marijuana cigarette was found in the suspect's right front pocket. He admitted that all evidence belonged to him, police said.
The teen was to be arraigned later today on charges of drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Woman out on bond
YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Dewey Avenue woman was arraigned on a felonious assault charge in the knifing of her live-in boyfriend.
Pamela J. Boston was released on a $1,500 bond after her appearance Monday in municipal court. She has another hearing set for 2 p.m. June 27 before Judge Robert A. Douglas.
Police reports say Boston cut the left arm of her boyfriend Sunday night with a kitchen knife after she became upset because he was talking to another woman on the phone.
