LIBERTY - In addition to the three R's, this fall students at Liberty High School will be learning more about the three D's - drinking, drugs and driving.
The national "Turn Onto Safe Driving" program uses a themed daily planner that is given to students. The Northcoast Student Alliance in Strongsville has been contracted to provide the planners.
Tom Holtzman of the alliance said the planners contain statistics about driving under the influence, true stories and pages for students to keep track of goals.
The planners are meant to educate the students throughout the school year. The goal pages are a tool to teach students that they can better themselves.
Objective
Northcoast Student Alliance said it hopes to bring the program into other area schools such as Poland and Struthers in the near future.
The planners are free to the school and produced with the support of local businesses and community members. Ads range in cost from $395 to $995 for a quarter- to full-page ad, which provides yearlong advertising.
Business ads can include a specific message encouraging students to refrain from drinking or using drugs. At the request of the school, only one of each type of business will be included so that a variety of businesses can participate.
Holtzman added that anyone in the community concerned about the issues can place an ad, not just businesses.
