Athletes honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Youngstown State University student-athletes have been named to the 2002 Spring Academic All-Horizon League team.
Kelly Leonard, a senior track and field performer, junior distance runner Kirk Michaelis and sophomore baseball player Jim Lipinski were first-team selections.
Leonard, a Canfield native, has a 3.62 grade point average in general administration and she won the league championship and tied the meet record with a time of 14.58 seconds in the 100 hurdles. She was also third in the 400 hurdles (64.21).
Michaelis, who set the YSU record in the mile with a seventh-place time of 4 minutes, 3.37 seconds in the men's Olympic Development heat at the Penn Relays, won two league championships in the 800 (1:52.53) and the 1500 (3:51.96). He carries a 3.41 GPA in exercise science.
Lipinski, who set the YSU freshman home run record last season, was named honorable mention Freshman All-American. He hit .293 with four home runs and drove in 27 runs. Lipinski has a 3.48 GPA in integrated math.
To be eligible, student-athletes must own a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better, must be a starter of significant reserve and have completed at least three semesters at the same institution.

Express falls
MURRYSVILLE, Pa. -- The Youngstown Express collegiate baseball team, playing away for the first time this season, dropped a 2-1 decision to the Murrysville Maulers.
Loser Bobby Sindelar worked six innings, gave up five hits and two earned runs.
Derek Hebert, Chase Odenrider and Brad Whitman paced Express (1-1) with two hits apiece.
"We didn't get hits when we needed them," coach Bill Mossiello said. "We had 10 hits and only one run and that's about 100 percent opposite of what I like. You have to find ways to put the ball in play."
The Express will entertain the Lima Locos today at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
Sunday, the Express will host Grand Lake, Mich., at Pemberton at 1 p.m., then travel to Cafaro Field for an exhibition game with the Scrappers at 7 p.m.
Warren golfersfinish high
TWINSBURG -- Carlie Eastman of Warren won medalist honors in the girls 16-19 year division as she fired 48-41--87 in the North Coast Junior Golf Tour at Gleneagles Golf Club.
In the boys 16-19 bracket, Chuck Scarbrough of Warren shot 37-39--76 to finish second.
McKinley-Bakesin Mar-Hill lead
CANFIELD -- Charlesetta McKinley and Ray Bakes rolled 1,428 to lead the 30th annual Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles Tournament at Amron Lanes.
Fran Taylor and Lamont Stevens are in second with 1,415, while the teams of Lori Crum/Jim Diver and Donna Jacobs/Bakes are tied with 1,413.
Squads are 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through July 28.
Crestview planningsoftball tournament
COLUMBIANA -- The Crestview Softball Association will hold its second annual Fastpitch Tournament in three age divisions in July.

Wedgewood teamwins bocce title
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several names were omitted from the Fernando's Wedgewood Pizza team that captured the City Bocce Tournament championship.
The entire team included captain Gene Russo, Bob Camardo, Sal Sorice, Mario Pacella, Gino DeChellis, George Panno, Albert Pacella, Mike Motareschi and Tom George.

Aeros on roll
READING, Pa. -- Corey Erickson homered twice and drove in three runs as the Akron Aeros extended their franchise-record winning streak to 11 with a 7-6 Eastern League victory over the Reading Phillies Friday night.
Brian Tallet (6-1) earned the victory, allowing eight hits and six runs, all earned, over six innings.
