Boardman girlsto run at N.C. State
RALEIGH, N.C -- Brittany Durkin, Gina Mavrikis, Sarah Grabert and Monica Cuevas, Boardman High School's 4x800-meter relay, will compete in the Adidas Outdoor National High School Championships Friday and Saturday at North Carolina State University.
The girls go into the event having posted their best effort of the season -- 9 minutes, 24.35 seconds last week in the Division I state meet in Dayton.
Cuevas, a junior, will also compete in the 800-meter run. She recorded a 2:12.9 at the regionals and finished fourth at state (2:14.47).
Senior Ashley Kohler will participate in the discus. Her best effort this season was 137 feet, 9 inches.
Boardman coach Denise Gorski will accompany the girls on the trip.
Tennis tournamentat Packard Park
WARREN -- The 2002 Keith Vens Memorial Tennis Tournament is set June 19-23 at the Packard Park tennis facility.
Entry deadline is Saturday. Costs for Trumbull County Tennis Association members are $13 for one event, $18 for two events and $23 for three. For non-members, the costs are $18 for one event, $23 for two and $28 for three.

Fitch runnersmoving on
AUSTINTOWN -- Three Austintown Fitch High graduating seniors and distance runners have selected colleges where they will resume running careers.
Sean Williams is headed for Clarion University, while Jessica Kunkle will go to Bethany College and Kaitlin Kempe will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.
The trio will join nine other former Fitch distance runners in the collegiate ranks. The nine are Tim Tatarka, Melissa Ruffner and Julie Cole, Youngstown State; Justin Kempe, Ohio University; Stacey Havaich, South Florida; Nicole Drouhard, Baldwin-Wallace; Rachael LaRicca, Malone; Megan Crowley, Misercordia; and Karen Setty, Dayton.
Justin Kempe was selected by his OU track teammates to serve as captain of the 2003 team. Kempe competes in both track and cross country, and was the Bobcats' top competitor in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Miller honored
MINERAL RIDGE -- Tom Miller was presented with the Man of the Year award by the Ohio State Former Boxers and Associates at a ceremony in Cleveland.
An international professional and amateur boxing judge, Miller has done 120 pro, 1,200 amateur and 21 title fights.
Tomaino to B-W
BEREA -- Jackson-Milton High School graduate Desra Tomaino will attend Baldwin-Wallace and participate on the school's volleyball team.
At Jackson-Milton, Tomaino earned three letters in volleyball, four in track and field and four in basketball.
She was a three-time all-league selection in volleyball and twice all-district.
Weightlifting event
VIENNA -- Mathews High will host a weightlifting competition Saturday at 1 p.m. However, Galaban Boevski, an Olympic and world champion, will not appear at the event, as previously announced.

Aeros win
AKRON -- Nate Grindell and Jhonny Peralta hit two-run homers as the Akron Aeros won their eighth straight, beating the Trenton Thunder 7-2 Tuesday night in the Eastern League.
Grindell and Peralta homered in the second inning, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Trenton got out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Andy Dominique's two-run homer.
Akron responded in the bottom of the inning with Jody Gerut's RBI double and a ground-out RBI by Billy Munoz.
Corey Erickson added a solo home run in the fourth.
Billy Traber (9-2) settled down after a rough first inning to get the win. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings.
Carl Sadler and Dave Elder combined for three innings of one-hit relief.

Baseball labor
NEW YORK -- Baseball owners made the first movement on their key luxury-tax proposal since they gave it to players on Jan. 9, offering to lower the percentage for a transitional period.
Owners also proposed to cut the percentage of money that the commissioner could unilaterally give to teams from baseball's central fund, which currently is split equally to all teams.
