Momentum International, a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to work with people with disabilities is sponsoring a 5K run, walk and wheelchair race to raise awareness and money for people with disabilities. Proceeds go toward developing wheelchair racing programs in western Pennsylvania and to Momentum's nonprofit wheelchair factor in Quito, Ecuador.
Who: The race is open to runners, walkers, children and those with disabilities. World-class paralympic athletes from Portugal, Ecuador, Columbia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States are racing.
Where: Start and finish are at Pearson Park, off Mitchell Road in Neshannock Township.When: 9 a.m. July 13.Start times: 9 a.m., 5K wheelchair division; 9:05 a.m., 5K runners and walkers; 10:05 a.m., 0.2 mile division for children under 7 at the park; 10:20 a.m., 0.5 mile division for children 8 to 10 at the park.Race number pickup: At a pasta dinner July 12 at St. Joseph's Church, Cascade Street, New Castle, or from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. race day at Pearson Park.Race course: The starting line will be in Pearson Park at Mitchell Road, down Plank Road and left onto Shenango Road, left onto Mercer Road with the finish as you enter Pearson Park again.Entry fee: $15 if received by July 10; $20 race day; $10 for children's registration.Donations: Additional donations may be made to Momentum International Inc. and are tax deductible. The first 500 entrants will receive a commemorative Momentum T-shirt.Awards: The top male and female finishers in the 5K race will receive $300, $200 and $100 prizes. Runners finishing at the top of their age divisions will receive medals. Everyone under 7 or over 70 will receive medals. The top four wheelchair division finishers will receive $300, $200, $100, and $75 prizes, respectively. Those in fifth through 10th place will get $50 each.Mailing information: Registration must be postmarked no later than July 10.
