Hoops teamhires assistant
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Robic, Youngstown State University's men's basketball coach announced Friday the addition of Ross Burns as an assistant coach.
Burns, a former player under Robic at the University of Massachusetts, spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Wagner College.
"Ross brings a lot of the same qualities as when Derek Kellogg was here as an assistant," Robic said. "Ross did a great job at Wagner and earned some invaluable experience from Coach Whittenberg. Also, now with the rule changes in NCAA basketball, he can actively recruit for us."
Burns won four letters at UMass and was a member of the 1996 Final Four team.

Nagy placedon disabled list
CLEVELAND -- Charles Nagy may have thrown his last pitch with the Cleveland Indians.
Nagy, pitching the past two seasons without any cartilage in his right elbow, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday by the Indians, who have been able to use the 12-year veteran only sporadically.
The 35-year-old Nagy, who has 128 career victories, had been one of baseball's dependable pitchers before elbow problems forced two surgeries since 2000.
He had been relegated to pitching in long relief this season and has appeared in just 10 games, going 0-1 with an 11.29 ERA. This is his fifth trip to the DL since May 2000.
Nagy will go to Triple-A Buffalo to begin a rehab stint and Shapiro said the right-hander will be re-evaluated after "three or four starts" with the Bisons.
Wagner leads
PRESTO, Pa. -- Jack Wagner, who starred in the roles of Frisco Jones on "General Hospital" and Dr. Burns on "Melrose Place," shot a 3-under-par 69 Friday and held a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational.
Wagner led a 63-player field over a course at the Club at Nevillewood that was still soggy from heavy rain all day Thursday.
Former NHL player Bernie Nicholls, former major league pitcher Shane Rawley and NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver all had 73s.
"I hit some bad shots and had three bogeys in the last four holes, which is very disappointing," Wagner said. "But it was the first day, and there were real soft conditions."
Lemieux, the tournament host, shot a 20-over 92 -- his worst score in the event. His wife, Nathalie, beat her husband by seven strokes.
Other notable scores included Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart, 80; NBA great Michael Jordan, 83; former NBA star Charles Barkley, 93; Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchey, 103; Steelers coach Bill Cowher, 104; Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, 105; Canadian figure skater David Pelletier, an Olympic gold medalist, 105; NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann, 105; and Jamie Sale, Pelletier's partner, 124.
Lemieux to return
PRESTO, Pa. -- In good shape and without any physical problems, Mario Lemieux said Friday he will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins next season.
Lemieux spoke publicly for the first time since early March when he announced a premature end to the 2001-02 season because of a nagging hip injury. He announced his return during the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Club in Nevillewood.
"I just started working out in early May to try to keep in shape," Lemieux said.
Lemieux played just 24 games in the regular season after injuring his hip during the preseason in early September. He also took time off for surgery and to help Team Canada win the gold medal during the Winter Olympics.
The Penguins' captain and owner says he's looking forward to working out with some NHL players in early August, a month before Pittsburgh begins training camp.
