Prisoner escapes
EAST LIVERPOOL -- A man who fled from a Columbiana County deputy sheriff remains at large.
Jonathon Burns, 24, of Smithfield Street, East Liverpool, fled about 8 a.m. Friday when let out of a cruiser outside East Liverpool Municipal Court on Sixth Street.
Burns, who was a county jail inmate, was wearing orange prisoner coveralls and handcuffs when he escaped.
He was to appear in court on a warrant for charges of failure to appear and failure to comply with terms of his probation.
The sheriff's department has filed a felony escape charge against him, a department spokesman said today.
Tools stolen
SALEM -- A Leetonia man told Salem police that someone broke into his vehicle and stole nearly $1,200 worth of tools.
The man said the theft occurred sometime after 3:30 p.m. Friday while his vehicle was parked outside the Giant Eagle supermarket on East State Street, police said.
Adult retreat center
ROGERS -- Camp Frederick Center for Spiritual Renewal will break ground at 6:30 p.m. Friday on a new adult retreat center. The center will have nine double rooms with private baths.
Completion of the new center in January along with three other all-seasons centers will give the camp a capacity of about 150 people. Call (330) 227-3633.
Beaver Twp. meeting
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will meet in special session at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday to vote on putting a 1.5-mill renewal levy for the fire department on the November ballot.
The meeting will be in the township meeting room in the South Range Plaza.
Wreck hurts two
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two city men were injured after their car left the road and crashed on Pa. Route 108 in Scott Township.
Driver Antonio Marapese, 21, was in serious condition this morning at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. His passenger, Pasquale Nerti, 19, was treated at United Community Hospital in Grove City.
State police said the car left the road at a bend, crashed into a small group of trees and flipped over four times before hitting another tree. The car slid about 46 more feet before stopping.
Firefighters from Scott and Slippery Rock townships were called to help.
Police said the men were not wearing seat belts.
Suspicious fires
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Firefighters are investigating suspicious fires at three vacant homes on Grant Street. The homes caught fire at about 3:30 a.m. today in the block between Highland Avenue and East Street.
Fire Chief James Donston could not be reached this morning for more details.
Plan for stoplights
VIENNA -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is taking public comment until Aug. 15 on its plan to install traffic lights at state Routes 11 and 82 near Candywood Golf Course on the Vienna-Howland township line.
ODOT said the intersection meets the criteria to warrant full lighting, based on traffic volume and the frequency of accidents.
