Phantoms setmore tryouts
BOARDMAN -- The Phantom Rockets minor-league ice hockey team will hold final tryouts this weekend at the Ice Zone.
Tryouts are set Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from noon-5 p.m.
Phantom coach Bob Hawthorne says 12 players will be signed once tryouts end.
Training camp will begin in September for the inaugural season that begins in October.
Hawthornes said host families are being sought for the 24 players, most of whom are expected to come from outside the Mahoning Valley. Host families will receive $250 per month.
Phantom players must be age 18-22 and either work or attend school.

Aydelotteis 12th
CHARDON -- Warren's Scott Aydelotte shot a 73 -- 2-over par -- to finish 12th in the boys 16-19 age bracket at Thursday's North Coast Junior Golf Tournament at Pine Ridge Golf Club.
Warren's Carlie Eastman finished third in the girls 16-19 bracket with an 82 and Charissa Mills, also of Warren, shot an 89 to place seventh.
Dart Truckinggoes unbeaten
BOARDMAN -- Boardman's Tri-T pony girls softball team, sponsored by Dart Trucking, finished the season undefeated (21-0).
Team members are: Sarah Navarro, Alyssa Calautti, Robyn Musgrove, Beth Franklin, Tricia Bailey, Candace Golubic, Addie Carothers, Nicole Ford, Sarah Stafford, Katie Zetts, Mallory Hay, DiAndra DiBacco, Sarah Albani and Amberly Ehrheart.
Coaches are Joe Stafford, Jim Bailey, Barry DiBacco and Mark Musgrove.
Canfield teamgoes 12-0
CANFIELD -- Canfield Baseball Club's 9-year-old tournament team posted a 12-0 record to win the Girard, Crestview and Austintown tournaments.
Players are Ryan Abraham, Bennie Angelo, Charlie Bancroft, Adam Bouch, Danny Campolito, Anthony Gelonese, Brock McGivern, Tyler Mettille, Anthony Patella, Chaz Regano, Michael Werner and Jonathan Zvara.
Plastow getsdouble eagle
SALEM -- Doug Plastow of Tampa, Fla., scored a double eagle on the 478-yard, No. 15 hole at Salem Hills Golf Course in Salem recently.
Plastow played the par-5 hole from the blue (longest) tees, and used a 3-wood to cup his third shot for the double eagle.
Witnesses were Rich Juhn and Dick Grimstead.

Tressel's Buckeyespicked for second
CHICAGO -- Michigan was picked Thursday by sports reporters as most likely to win the Big Ten Conference championship.
Ohio State and Michigan State were ranked two and three in a pre-season conference football poll by media members, who met with coaches and players.
"I tell the players that opinions disappear and records endure," said Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr of his team's ranking. "The expectations for Michigan from people inside and outside the program are extremely high."
Michigan finished second in the Big Ten last season, behind Illinois. Ohio State finished last season third in the conference at 5-3, while Michigan State compiled a 3-5 record.
Michigan State junior wide receiver Charles Rogers was named pre-season offensive player of the year, while Ohio State senior strong safety Mike Doss earned defensive honors.
Doss has led the Buckeyes in tackles for the past two seasons and is a two-time All-Big Ten honoree.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Second baseman Ray Durham, the subject of recent trade rumors, was finally dealt by the Chicago White Sox to the Oakland Athletics for Triple-A pitcher Jon Adkins.
In another deal, outfielder Hiram Bocachica was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitcher Tom Farmer and a player to be named.
