Labatte joinssoccer program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chris Labatte has been named assistant women's soccer coach at Youngstown State University.
Prior to joining the YSU staff, Labatte served as a professional trainer and coach since 2000 at MVP Soccer in Struthers.
From 1998-2000, he was boys coach for teams in the Peninsula United Football Club in Newport News, Va., and led the U-16 squad to a division championship with an 8-0-2 record.
Labatte, who played two seasons at the College of Charleston from 1988-89, played internationally from 1995-98 and was a member of the U.S. Army National team in 1994.
Labatte, who earned an Associate's of Liberal Arts Degree from St. Leo University in 1999, and his United States Soccer Federation National D License in 2000, is currently pursuing his bachelor's degree in computer science at Youngstown State.

Repec headedto Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Matt Repec, a Boardman High graduate, will continue his education and athletic career at Winthrop University.
Winthrop is a Division I university and a member of the Big South Conference .
Winthrop coach Joe Hudak, a New Castle, Pa., native, led the Eagles to Big South championships in 1995 and '99 and NCAA appearances in 1995-99 and 2001.
Repec, a member of Line Drive Academy, was a three-year letterman at Boardman High, a three-time All-Steel Valley Conference selection and a Vindicator spring athlete of the year in 2001.

NILES -- On Tuesday, the Scrappers honored nine area high school students who earned "Athlete of the Month" honors this year from Humility of Mary Health Partners and the Competitive Edge. They were Desra Tomaino (Jackson-Milton volleyball), Tom Albani (Boardman cross country), Chris Macali (Warren JFK golf), Steve Vallos (Boardman wrestling), Josh Shaffer (LaBrae weightlifting), Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman swimming), Meghan Linnelli (Canfield swimming), Monica Cuevas (Boardman track), Ryan Petrick (Champion track). Cuevas was awarded "Athlete of the Year" honors.
Bowling camp setfor Bell Wick Bowl
HUBBARD -- Head coach Fred Borden of Team USA will present a two-day bowling camp July 30-31 at Bell Wick Bowl.
Borden is a bowler, instructor, inventor, author and proprietor. He began teaching with his Learn to Bowl classes in the early 1960s.
His classes became so popular, soon he was instructing as many as 400 beginning bowlers at one time.
His teaching effectiveness reached the Professional Bowlers Association. Don Johnson, an eventual winner of 26 PBA titles, was one of his first pupils.
The camp will include two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of lane instruction each day. For more information, call Bell Wick Bowl at (330) 534-1179.
Browns helpingwith blood drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cleveland Browns will team up with the American Red Cross and the American Sickle Cell Anemia Association for seven local blood drives across northeast Ohio on Saturday.
Area donors can visit the Youngstown YMCA from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donors will receive a Browns T-shirt and be eligible to win special prizes.

Bouts televisedat Mountaineer
CHESTER, W.Va. -- Fight cards will be held tonight and Friday at Mountaineer Race Track & amp; Gaming resort. The events will be televised on ESPN tonight and ESPN2 Friday.
Tickets, available through Ticketmaster or at Mountaineer, are $30 for ringside, $20 for reserved and $10 for general admission. Those purchasing tickets for tonight's fight will get their Friday ticket for half price.
Aeros edge Erie
AKRON -- Nate Grindell's pinch-hit, two-out single to right drove in Victor Martinez with the winning run in the ninth inning, and the Akron Aeros beat the Erie SeaWolves 3-2 Wednesday night in the Eastern League.
