Held on murder charge
CAMPBELL -- A 23-year-old Akron man is being held by city police on a murder charge in the shooting death of Glenn Land, 19, of Campbell on Wednesday morning.
Schaun Coldy was arrested by police at an apartment in the Michael J. Kirwan Homes on Jackson Street shortly after a shootout at the housing project.
He is accused of being the gunman who killed Land.
William Fowler, 43, of Youngstown also was wounded in the shootout, which brought at least 30 officers from Campbell and five other police agencies to the scene.
Police think Fowler may have been hit by a stray bullet.
A vandalized convertible also was found at the scene, but police said the car was not involved in the initial shooting.
Three other people were arrested at the scene, one on charges of disorderly conduct and assault and two on outstanding warrants.
Autopsy in stabbing
STRUTHERS -- Police are waiting for autopsy results on Clarence McCoy, 44, of Campbell, who was stabbed to death Sunday night.
The victim's estranged wife, Tammy McCoy, 36, of Walter Street, Campbell, also received multiple stab wounds. McCoy was staying at her brother's Columbus Street home when the stabbing occurred.
Police said no charges have been filed and no additional information will be available until all evidence from the stabbing is brought to the prosecutor early next week.
Facing assault charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jason Jordon, 24, of Idora Avenue was arrested on a felonious assault charge after children at the Fosterville Playground identified him as the man who hit a 10-year-old girl in the head with a baseball bat.
When police arrived at the playground on West Indianola Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, the girl had a "goose egg" on her head and was being attended by an ambulance crew.
The playground director told police which way Jordon headed and the officers caught him on Griselda Avenue. They said they detected a strong smell of alcohol on Jordon and told them, "Man, I didn't hit that girl that hard."
Child-enticement case
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kenneth L. Favors, 48, of West Delason Avenue has been arrested on two counts of child enticement. The warrants were issued in June and used late Wednesday to take Favors into custody.
He is accused of luring 8-year-old twin boys to a convenience store on Market Street as they walked home from school June 4. Favors bought them candy and himself a beer, reports show.
The boys said the man put a hand on each of their shoulders as he walked them across the street to the store. The twins were hysterical when they arrived home, their mother told police.
Paving pacts awarded
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- The contract for the Phil Rose cul-de-sac paving project has been awarded to low bidder Craig Susany Inc., North Lima, at $53,974.
Springfield Township trustees opened the bids two weeks ago.
Trustees also awarded a contract Wednesday for paving at Fire Stations 1 and 3 and the New Middletown recycling site to low bidder Cleveland Asphalt Inc. at $32,232.
Trustees also indicated they will put renewals on the November ballot for two 2-mill levies, one for the general fund and one for the fire fund.
$30,000 beautification
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Department of Jobs and Family Services plans to undertake more than $30,000 of improvements to beautify and enlarge the lobby of its building on South Park Avenue.
Trumbull County commissioners have approved advertising for bids for the project, which will be completed with state funds.
Girard council meets
GIRARD -- City council will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers to fill a vacant seat.
The meeting, called by council President Louis J. Adovasio, is needed because of the resignation of 3rd Ward Councilman Brian Kren, who is going to law school.
The four Democratic precinct committee members met to name a successor, but two candidates -- Clyde Wagner and Pete Shelby III -- each received two votes.
Christ Michelakis, Trumbull County Democratic Party chairman, then informed council members that it's up to them to name the successor.
