NORTH JACKSON -- More than 35 miles of Mahoning County roads are in line for resurfacing in a program that begins this summer.
County Engineer Richard A. Marsico and Commissioners Edward J. Reese, David Ludt and Vicki Allen Sherlock were to announce the list of some 30 roads today.
Marsico said the project will eliminate potholes and help roads last longer. Another goal is to eliminate patching.
"The priority is to get all the roads in a good condition throughout the county and get as many paved each year as possible," Marsico said.
Biggest project
Getting the biggest face lift will be 3.7 miles of Leffingwell Road in Ellsworth and Canfield townships between state Route 45 and U.S. Route 62.
Among the other large projects are 3.5 miles of Palmyra Road between state Route 45 and Herbert Road in Ellsworth Township and between U.S. Routes 224 and 62 in Canfield Township; 3.3 miles of Kirk Road between state Route 45 and Lipkey Road in Jackson Township and between Turner Road and state Route 46 in Austintown Township; and 3 miles of Lisbon Road between Calla and Pine Lake roads in Green Township. Marsico said roads to be resurfaced are selected from among the 500 miles of county roadways by surveying road conditions and usage, as well as from input from road workers and township officials.
The total cost has been estimated at nearly $2 million.
Sales tax
Marsico said the county has been able to increase its resurfacing by about 10 to 15 miles per year since the 0.5 percent county sales tax went into effect. While the program used to resurface about 20 to 30 miles per year, it has reached up to 45 miles in recent years.
Twelve projects are funded by $504,000 generated from the sales tax and another 18 are funded by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant of $913,000, $309,000 in state gasoline taxes from the engineer's budget and $250,000 from the Mahoning County Solid Waste District.
