Canfield girlswin again
HUBER HEIGHTS -- A five-hour rain delay proved to be worth the wait Tuesday as the Canfield Little League softball team defeated Portsmouth West 16-3 to advance to the state championship game.
Canfield's age 11-12 team produced 12 hits in the four-inning contest.
Tricia Bettura tossed a two-hitter and struck out five batters.
Melissa West led the hitting attack with three hits and six RBIs.
Bebe Halfhill had two hits and three RBIs while her sister Jill had two hits and two RBIs.
Musial tourneyset in Warren
WARREN -- The AABC Stan Musial State Tournament is being held through Sunday at Packard Park's MacGregor Field.
Today, NEO Hot Stove plays Warren No. 2 at 5:30 p.m. and Cleveland Baseball Federation plays Warren No. 1 at 8:30 p.m.
Thursday, Youngstown plays Warren No. 3 at 5:30 p.m. and the Hot Stove-Warren 2 winner will play Baseball Federation-Warren 1 winner at 8:30 p.m.

NEWARK -- Mike Bartos and Dave Diyorio combined to pitch a four-hitter as the Youngstown Babe Ruth All-Stars defeated Mt. Vernon 5-3 Saturday in the state tournament. Monday, David Patrick tossed a one-hitter in the Stars' 9-1 win over Newark.
The game report in Tuesday's editions credited the wrong pitchers for the victories.
Tuesday, the Stars defeated Steubenville, 6-5, to advance to today's state title game.
Babe Ruthteam advances
ZANESVILLE -- Tyler Stanley tossed a one-hitter as the Youngstown 15-year-old Babe Ruth All Star team shut out Steubenville, 10-0, Tuesday to advance to Thursday's state championship game.
Youngstown scored five runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth.
Stanley struck out four batters and contributed two hits and three RBIs.
Ryan Hamilton had a two-run double while Brian Daugherty and Dave Piersante each had a run-scoring single. Dan Balog had two hits and an RBI, with John Foty drove in a run.
Line Driveplays Ontario
CINCINNATI -- Line Drive Academy of the Little "B" League was scheduled to play a team from Ontario today in the Mickey Mantle Regional baseball tournament.
Monday, Line Drive Academy lost to Ontario, 11-2. John Mang had three hits for Line Drive..
Tuesday, Line Drive Academy bounced back by defeating Wayne County, 7-1, and Midland, 6-4, to earn another shot at Ontario.
Mang hurled the win against Wayne on a six-hitter with late relief help from Adam Zakowski. Mang also added two singles and one RBI.
Mike Eliseo had a double, single and two RBIs and Steve Orlosky two singles for the winners.
Against Midland, Eliseo had a double, single and two RBIs.
Earlier in the tournament, Line Drive blanked Kentucky 2-0 in a first -round game as Mark Tanner fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
15 Stridersqualify
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Youngstown Strider Track and Field Club had 15 athletes qualify for the Junior Olympics at the AAU Region VI track meet held at Eastern Michigan University.
Byron Mosely led the way with a record-setting effort in the (13-14 age group) long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 6 inches. Mosely also won the 100-meter dash (11.5), 200 (23.4) and placed third in the 400 (55.3).
Also qualifying in the regional were Sarroya Townsend (15-16 age group) in the shot put (32-6) and discus (97-2); Roger Gillum (13-14) in the discus (117-9); Brittany Rivers (11) in the discus (47-8); Aaron Straughter (12) in the shot put (28-9); Raniesha Billingsley (12) in the 100 (13.8); Fitzgerald Edwards (12) in the 100 (12.6) and 200 (26.0); and Kevin Cylar (7-8) in the long jump (9-5).
The 12-year-old boys 4x100 relay, of Maurise Kerns, Billy Mayes, Jr., Derrick Stennis and Edwards, finished fourth (53.9). The 13-14-year-old boys relay, of Lamont Dawson, Dwayne Townsend, Rashawn Cook and Adam Foutz, finished fourth (4:24).

Aeros win
AKRON -- Jason Stanford pitched a three-hit complete game, and six Akron players had two hits each in a 14-hit attack, as Akron beat the Erie SeaWolves 12-0 Tuesday night.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Matt Lawton, on an injury rehabilitation assignment, was hitless in three official at bats. But he was the only player in Akron's lineup without a hit.
Former Scrappers Victor Martinez hit his 30th double of the season and Ryan Church drove in three runs.
