LifeBanc workshop

Medicaid program
COLUMBUS -- Uninsured women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through a federal screening program, administered by the Ohio Department of Health, may be eligible for treatment under an expanded Medicaid program made possible by the federal Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000. To qualify, women must be under the age of 65, uninsured and not otherwise eligible for Medicaid. ADA and cloning
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is opposed to a four-year moratorium on therapeutic cloning research proposed by the President's Council on Bioethics. The ADA supports therapeutic cloning research and a ban on reproductive cloning and supports immediate creation and enforcement of strict guidelines to regulate therapeutic cloning research, Dr. Francine R. Kaufman, ADA president, said. Dr. Kaufman said therapeutic cloning can be used to create replacement islet cells that can produce insulin and create replacement tissue to allow organs, such as the pancreas, to function normally; it may eliminate the need for immunosuppressive therapy, a harsh and destructive regimen that is currently necessary with islet cell replacement therapy.
Twilight Mile
SALEM -- The third annual Twilight Mile is Saturday at 8:15 p.m., immediately preceding the Star Trax 5K run at Salem's Reilly Stadium. Breast cancer seminar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Quota International of Youngstown offers a seminar on coping with the diagnosis of breast cancer Aug. 14 at McMenemy's on U.S. Route 422 in Niles and Aug. 15 at Holiday Inn on South Avenue in Boardman. Both programs begin with a 5 p.m. registration followed by an open buffet dinner. Kathy Purcell, a clinical social worker at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, will be keynote speaker for the program, offered by the American Cancer Society, Forum Health, Humility of Mary Health Partners and Youngstown Community Health Center. The cost is $15 per person, with the proceeds earmarked for the Silver Lining Fund, which assists people who cannot pay for cancer treatments. To register, call (330) 759-0697 by Aug. 7.

Overnight lock-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Black Knights Police Association will sponsor a free overnight lock-in for women Aug. 17. Food, gifts, facials and photo sessions will be available for participants. The purpose of the event is to bring old and young women of varied backgrounds together to say, "We are here, we do care ... and we want to assist you on your journey to productive adulthood," according to the announcement. The event, to be held at the Black Knights Police Association building at 1524 Oakland Avenue, is for females ages 10 and up. City officials, career counselors and others will speak.
