Corporate executives should aspire to ethics not greed

Saturday, July 20, 2002

America's economic guru, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan has spoken, warning Congress that corporate scandals have hurt the nation's economy and executives who cheat should be dealt with severely. Although the Senate and House have both passed measures to tighten accounting rules and stiffen the penalties for corporate lawbreakers, the problem is not so much illegalities as it is ethics. Even absent laws against executive profiteering, slip-sliding accountancy and boardroom shenanigans, ethical behavior in the higher echelons of corporate America should have been the rule, rather than the exceptional greed evinced by those who had no concept of responsibility.
