Eagle for the champ: Dorothy Delasin, the two-time defending champion of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, scored a rare eagle on the par-4, No. 3 hole at Squaw Creek Country Club. Delasin, playing in the Classic Pro-Am sponsored by Cellular One, made the eagle when she knocked a pitching wedge from 115 yards into the hole on her second shot. "All four of my playing partners had missed the green, so they told me to get it close," Delasin said. "I hit it and said it looked pretty good, then it hit 3 feet behind the pin and backed up into the hole." Delasin was playing with amateurs Bob Jennings, Ron Graff, Steve Paasch and Mike Bolognue.
Pak likes 15: Se Ri Pak, the 1998 champion of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic and third-place finisher last year, said that she thought the winning score could get as high as 15-under-par this year. "The course is in better shape and if someone has a hot putter the scores could go higher than last year," she said.
Hot start: The amateur team of Kevin Leya, John Finizio, Ron Capretta and Bruce Berry got off to a great start in Thursday's pro-am tournament. Playing with Beth Daniel, the team made the 9-hole turn in 10-under par, which included eight birdies and an eagle on No. 5. The team finished 16-under for the 18 holes, one of the best scores turned in during the day's event.
