Mother faces charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Alice J. Humphrey, a mother whose 10-year-old daughter was spotted on the roof of their two-story house changing the diaper of her 21/2-year-old brother, is charged with child endangerment. A concerned person passing by Humphrey's Rush Boulevard home on Thursday reported to police what he saw. Humphrey, 33, told police that she was unaware of the diaper-changing episode but was aware that her daughter liked to go out on the roof to read and had erected a makeshift tent on the roof. Police said the pitch of the roof is steep and the baby could have rolled off. Humphrey was issued a citation for arraignment today in municipal court.
Cited for refrigerators
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four children, ages 1, 2, 5 and 8, playing near several abandoned refrigerators in the rear yard of 2316 Elm St. led police to issue a court summons Thursday to Kenisha T. White, 24, who rents the property.
White, police said, violated the law that prohibits having abandoned refrigerators with doors intact accessible to children.
Beaver OKs defibrillator
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees approved the purchase of an $18,062 external defibrillator for the township rescue squad. The unit is being acquired through the state cooperative purchasing agreement.
Fire Chief Gary Borman said the township would have paid up to $24,000 for the equipment if it were not purchased through the state.
Also Thursday, Melissa Owens of Boardman and Jennifer King of New Middletown were hired as part-time dispatchers. They will begin working Sunday and will be paid $5.35 an hour while they are in training.
High school awarded
GIRARD -- Girard High School has been named a Buckeye Best Health School Gold Medal recipient by Gov. Bob Taft.
The award was created by the Ohio Department of Health and American Cancer Society to recognize schools which have policies and programs that support nutrition, physical activities and tobacco use prevention.
The high school operates a student assistance program with an emphasis on the prevention of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use.
Competency hearingcontinued for mother
WARREN -- A competency hearing for a woman charged with running over her daughter has been continued until Aug. 29.
Sherry Delker, 27, of Austintown, is charged with capital murder in the March 29 death of her 6-year-old daughter, Samantha Martin.
She has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity and a competency hearing was set for Thursday before Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The case was continued to allow the defense time to evaluate one of the reports of three experts who examined Delker.
Adoption group cookout
WARREN -- Families are invited to the Safari Cookout to benefit Northeast Ohio Adoption Services.
The annual event will be at Wagon Trails Animal Park in Vienna on Aug. 4 from 2-6 p.m.
It will include wagon rides to feed the animals up close, a petting zoo, clowns and face-painting.
Outback Steakhouse will do the cookout, with ice cream from Katie's Korner. Tickets are available until July 26 and cost $45 for adults and $15 for children.

NOAS has found families for more than 950 children since its founding in 1978. It does not charge fees to families for adoption.
Bicyclist injured
SALEM -- A city man was injured when he rode his bicycle into the back of a parked vehicle.
Kirk Sandoe, 23, of 782 W. Wilson St., was traveling east on West Eighth Street near North Ellsworth Avenue about 10 p.m. Thursday when he struck a parked hatchback car, police said.
The impact's force hurled Sandoe off his bike and through the car's rear window.
He was treated at Salem Community Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance.
