High school awarded
GIRARD -- Girard High School has been named a Buckeye Best Health School Gold Medal recipient by Gov. Bob Taft.
The award was created by the Ohio Department of Health and American Cancer Society to recognize schools which have policies and programs that support nutrition, physical activities and tobacco use prevention.
The high school operates a student assistance program with an emphasis on the prevention of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use.
Competency hearingcontinued for mother
WARREN -- A competency hearing for a woman charged with running over her daughter has been continued until Aug. 29. Sherry Delker, 27, of Austintown, is charged with capital murder in the March 29 death of her 6-year-old daughter, Samantha Martin. She has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity and a competency hearing was set for Thursday before Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. The case was continued to allow the defense time to evaluate one of the reports of three experts who examined Delker.
Adoption group cookout
WARREN -- Families are invited to the Safari Cookout to benefit Northeast Ohio Adoption Services. The annual event will be at Wagon Trails Animal Park in Vienna on Aug. 4 from 2-6 p.m. It will include wagon rides to feed the animals up close, a petting zoo, clowns and face-painting. Outback Steakhouse will do the cookout, with ice cream from Katie's Korner. Tickets are available until July 26 and cost $45 for adults and $15 for children. Reservations can be made by calling (330) 856-5582, Ext. 110. NOAS has found families for more than 950 children since its founding in 1978. It does not charge fees to families for adoption.
Soccer program
NILES - Registration runs through Aug. 10 for a soccer program for children ages 5 to 12 at Eastwood YMCA. The program will be conducted at the Churchill Park in Liberty. The cost is $25 for members and $35 plus a basic membership for nonmembers. A coaches' meeting will be Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. Call Steve Sprockett at (330) 544-2383.
Man stabbed
WARREN -- A 22-year-old Layer Road man was treated Thursday night for stab wounds. David Nichols told police he was on the front porch of a friend's house about 9:45 when several men he did not know attacked him.
Cited for refrigerators
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four children, ages 1, 2, 5 and 8, playing near several abandoned refrigerators in the rear yard of 2316 Elm St. led police to issue a court summons Thursday to Kenisha T. White, 24, who rents the property. White, police said, violated the law that prohibits having abandoned refrigerators with doors intact accessible to children.
Mother-in-law attacked
SHARON, Pa. -- A Sharon woman was in stable condition in Sharon Regional Health System's hospital, while her son-in-law, Richard B. McKee, 36, of Cedar Avenue, has been arrested on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and burglary.
Police say McKee attacked Judy Marrow around 10:30 p.m. Thursday in her home in front of several people.
He used a bench to smash open the front door, chased her from the house, caught her in a neighbor's yard and beat her face against the brick wall before knocking her down and punching and kicking her, the witnesses told police.
McKee was arrested around midnight at South Myers Avenue and East State Street.
Suicide in jail
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Lawrence County Jail inmate has apparently committed suicide.
Michael Nicholas Yakopovich, 52, whose last known address was New Castle, was found at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday in his cell. He apparently hanged himself with a piece of cloth attached to a locker.
Yakopovich has been jailed since February 2001 on three counts of indecent sexual assault, rape, sexual assault, indecent assault and possession of prohibitive offensive weapons.
