Cross country team
earns grades honor
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State women's cross country team earned the All-Academic Cross Country award, which is presented to squads who post 3.00-or-better cumulative grade point averages.
The YSU women placed 92nd in the nation out of 309 schools with a 3.13 GPA.

Girard hiresO'Hara to coach
GIRARD -- Bryan O'Hara, a former basketball coach at Liberty High School, has been named head coach for the Girard boys basketball program.
O'Hara, supervisor of math instruction at Trumbull County Educational Service Center, led the Liberty Leopards to a regional championship during his tenure there from 1993-2001.
He also was an assistant coach with the Girard team that won the state championship in 1993.
His coaching pay will be $6,100 a year.
Runway raceset Saturday
VIENNA -- The Rotary Club of Youngstown will hold its second Run The Runway 5K race Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Youngstown Warren Regional Airport.
The unique event is the only road race held on an active runway in the country. Runners will have the opportunity to run on the main runway at dusk with landing lights illuminating the course.
The 3.1-mile course is both flat and fast, and offers runners the chance for a fast time.
Registration opens at 7 p.m. at the airport.
Last year's event attracted more than 200 runners. Prizes will be awarded to the top overall finishers as well as to each age group.
Baseball showcasewill be Tuesday
STRUTHERS -- Prior to the start of next week's Connie Mack Tournament, Youngstown's Class B baseball will host a showcase on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for area graduates in the classes of 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
College coaches and pro scouts will attend the daylong showcase.
The day will begin with Boardman High coach Scott Knox, a former college coach, conducting a player recruitment workshop. Parents are encouraged to attend.
The remainder of the day will include workouts for pitchers, catchers and position players and end with batting practice.

Daughterypicks Mount
ALLIANCE -- Adam Daughtery, a Brookfield High School graduate, will continue his baseball career at Mount Union College.
A 6-1, 180-pound baseball infielder, Daugherty was an honorable mention All--TAC 8 selection and a two-year team captain for the Warriors.
Mount Union's baseball team (20-19-1/9-8-1 OAC) finished third overall in the OAC regular season and placed second at the conference tournament last season.
JFK golfer Kokrakin contention
SYLVANIA -- After two days of competition, Warren JFK senior Jason Kokrak has a 5-under 139 score at the 96th Ohio Amateur golf championship.
Kokrak is three strokes behind Princeton's Jason Gerken and Ohio State's Justin Collins.
Gerken shot a 69 Wednesday by shooting three birdies and 15 pars.
Collins shot a 5-under-par 67, matching Ashland's Tony Brown for the low round of the day.
Also at 139 are Miami University player Michael Sabo, University of Maryland senior John Moheyer of Lima and Westerville banker Michael Kelley.
Sixty players made the cut of 148 or better.

CLEVELAND -- Tickets for Cleveland Browns home games go on sale Saturday at 9 a.m. through TicketMaster. Prices begin at $30. Most of the seats are located in the upper northwest and northeast corners of Cleveland Browns Stadium.

NORWICH, Conn. -- Jorge Sequea hit a three-run homer and scored two runs in the same inning as the American League beat the National League in the Double-A All-Star game 11-2.
Sequea, of the Erie SeaWolves, homered in his second trip to the plate in the AL's nine-run seventh inning.
