NEWTON FALLS -- City council has set Aug. 6 for a recall election for two city councilmen.
The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified petitions last week for voters to decide if Lester Irwin, 2nd Ward, and Thomas McKee, 4th Ward, should be removed from office.
Council had to schedule an election between 30 and 40 days from when the petitions were certified -- in this case, between Aug. 10 and 20.
Trailer and wagon stolen
HUBBARD -- A utility trailer with a horse-drawn wagon on it was reported stolen Monday.
The owner said the theft occurred sometime between 6 a.m. and noon at a residence on Collar-Price Road.
Township Detective Mike Begeot said police have leads and hope to make an arrest soon.
MVSD board to respond
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District board will respond within a month to a grievance filed by union workers.
Members of Local 1649 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed the grievance July 1 after changes in their health coverage with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Anthem changed the plan.
Union members offered to accept the contract in full if the MVSD board would extend the health coverage plan for four years, through the next labor contract.
The other option offered by union members was for the MVSD to reimburse each member through the remaining year of this contract the additional out-of-pocket cost under the new plan.
Shots fired at houses
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two South Side houses were fired at in separate shootings late Monday and early today.
At 11:45 p.m. Monday, a bullet sailed through a second-floor bedroom window in the 200 block of East Avondale Avenue, missing a man at his desk by 10 feet, police said. The bullet lodged in the closet door.
At 2:15 a.m., shots were fired from a car at a house in the 200 block of East Pasadena Avenue. A resident ran outside and returned fire.
East Palestine festival
EAST PALESTINE -- Organizers of the 18th annual East Palestine Park Festival are accepting reservations from food vendors, craft or antique dealers and car show participants.
The festival will be 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27. Call Shirley Gorby at (330) 426-9501.
2 face assault charges
GOSHEN -- Two Salem men were to appear today in Mahoning County Court in Sebring after being charged with felonious assault early Sunday at Ponderosa Park.
A report by the Goshen Township Police Department said a man from Carnegie, Pa., a Pittsburgh suburb, was seriously injured but did not say if he required medical treatment.
Police said they responded to a report of a man being beaten with shovels, bats and pipes at the campground.
Officers found a group of people around the man, who had been hit many times in the face and head.
Police said Scanlon was riding a golf cart through the area when at least three people assaulted him.
The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, North Jackson police and Canfield police were called out to prevent people from leaving the grounds.
Church expansion
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Faith United Presbyterian Church at 2370 N. Hermitage Road will be allowed to build an addition.
The church is in a single-family residential district and needed the approval of the zoning hearing board, which was granted Monday.
The expansion will house a new sanctuary. The old sanctuary will be converted to office space.
