Babe Ruth (age 13)
East Side Kiwanis came out on top in a best-of-three series against Lawrence County Cougars to win the league championship. With the series tied at a game apiece, ESK and Lawrence County took a 4-4 tie into the bottom of the seventh inning of the final game. With one out, ESK's Tony Brunetti doubled to left-center. After another out and a walk, Joe Morales delivered the game-winning hit with a line drive to right. Clayton Ruminski was the winning pitcher in relief of Brunetti, who went 4 1/3 innings. ESK took game one of the series 6-5. Brunetti pitched four innings to get the win and Jesse Moses pitched three scoreless to get the save. Ruminski doubled as Kiwanis had a five-run sixth. Lawrence County evened the series in game two with a 2-1 victory. Matt Germanski singled home Joey Motto to tie the game in the seventh for the Cougars. Germanski later scored on a fielder's choice for the go-ahead run. Brandon Ray pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. Members of the ESK team were Matt Katich, Moses, Ruminski, Frank Rosile, Chris Lacivita, Dan Janovick, Morales, Alex Morales, Brunetti, Mike Olenych, and Jimmy Hagan. The coaches were Chuck Olenych and Don Brunetti.
Tri-T COLT (ages 15-16)
Struthers Daily Legal News 14, Niles Buckeye Beverage 4 -- Mike Dubos hit a home run and doubled. Jon Neider had two hits, including a home run. Tom Peluso had two hits, including a double. Chris Broderick and Frank Speziale had two hits each. Adam Wolfgang went the distance to get the win for Struthers. Tom Roberto had a double and triple, and Chris Cardine had two doubles for Niles.
Little League District
(11-12 Division)
Campbell 4, Poland 2 -- Bob Switka threw a complete-game four-hitter, Mark Turnbull collected three hits and three RBIs while Eligio Bonilla had two hits. For Poland, Ben Umbel had two hits.
Brookfield 8, Austintown North 0 -- Patrick Mulligan yielded just four hits, Chad Kostra doubled twice while Adam Hall and Mulligan each had a double and a single. John Colla and Joe Dina doubled for Austintown.
Boardman East 6, Struthers 1.
Canfield 4, Austintown South 2.
Niles 14, Columbiana 4.
Boardman West 9, Lordstown 1.
Lakeview 12, Warren 9.
SOFTBALL
NSA state tournament (14-younger)
CINCINNATI -- Valley Sting Purple took third place in a field of 32 teams, losing 2-0 to the Cincinnati Lady Thunder in the final of the winners bracket. Amber Adley had five hits including a homer for Purple (47-10). Kasey Karr pitched three victories.
Pittsburgh PONY tournament (12-younger)
PITTSBURGH -- Valley Sting took second place. The Sting (48-6) won four tournaments, took second in three more and will compete at the national tournament in Sterling, Virginia on July 23-28.
Little League District (11-12)
Canfield 20, Brookfield 1 -- Tricia Bettura had four hits. Lauren Sulick had a home run and Brittany Danilov had two hits and pitched a six-hitter, striking out seven. Ashley Yasall had two hits for Brookfield.
