INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been picked to win the 2002 Horizon League baseball title in a preseason poll of head coaches.
UM-Milwaukee won the league title a year ago (39-18, 16-4). In the seven-team league Youngstown State has been picked to finish sixth.
The Penguins were 24-30-1 last season and 12-15 in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Ill-Chicago getstop honors

UIC won the league title a year ago (46-23, 9-3). In the eight-team league, Youngstown State has been picked to finish last.
The Penguins were 12-38 last season and 6-16 in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Martin, Lydenlead alumni win
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former women's basketball standout Anne Marie Martin scored 17 points and Jen Lyden added 14 points Saturday to lead the Red past the White 53-48 in the annual Youngstown State Alumni Game.
Lisa Rotunno-Modekski led the White with 10 points and Karen Lane-Pavlansky and Brianne Kenneally each had eight points.
Smail, Levetowin events
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University divers Mandy Smail and Kalyn Leveto earned the only wins for the YSU swimming and diving team in Saturday's 154-89 loss to Clarion.
Smail won the 1-meter diving and Leveto earned first in the 3-meter diving.
The YSU last home meet of the season will be Saturday against Niagara at 1 p.m.

LPGA seekshole sponsors
VIENNA -- The Giant Eagle LPGA Classic is seeking hole sponsors for the tournament that will be played July 15-21 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
Tournament spectators rely on the descriptions of each hole found in the official souvenir program, making tee sponsorships one of the most recognizable promotional opportunities available.
Tee sponsors receive one full-page, four-color ad in the program on the page facing the description of the hole. The company logo also will be prominently displayed in color on signs describing the hole.

Curbstoneto hear Meshel
BOARDMAN -- Former state senator Harry Meshel, a member of the International Boxing Commission, will be the guest speaker when the Curbstone Coaches Association has its weekly luncheon Monday at noon at the Lockwood House.
Meshel is also on the Mill Creek Park Commission.
Mount planscelebration
ALLIANCE -- To honor its 2001 NCAA Division III national championship football team, Mount Union College has planned a Purple Raider Recognition Rally on Feb. 7.
The rally will take place in the Hoover-Price Campus Center. The community will be able to get player autographs, receive giveaways, see displays and enjoy refreshments during a "pre-game warm-up and conditioning session" from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45.
The "kickoff" follows at 6:45 with Master of Ceremonies Joe Tait, Mount Union's TV voice and radio voice of the Cavaliers.
Calling the signals will be Mount Union president Dr. Jack Ewing, Alliance Mayor Toni Middleton, Alliance Chamber of Commerce chairman Alan Andreani, football coach Larry Kehres and team players.
A video highlight of the 2001 season, entitled "6-cess," also will be shown.

Poland's Bateshonored
ATHENS -- Candace Bates, a sophomore wing for the Ohio University women's basketball team from Poland High, has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for her performances last week.
Bates combined for 39 points and 10 rebounds in an 85-74 loss to Ball State and a 75-69 win over Central Mich.
She had 23 points on 9-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, against Ball State; and 16 points with 6-for-9 from the floor versus CMU.
Bates holds the career scoring record at Poland High with more than 1,200 points.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College men's and women's swimming teams are represented among the top NCAA Division II times in the nation.
Men's swimmers ranked are Jim Mann (100 backstroke, 12th, :52.45), Eric Mojock (100 backstroke, 20th, :52.86) and Seth Bontrager (400 individual medley, 27th, 4:14.34). Mojock is a Kennedy Catholic High graduate.
Women's swimmers ranked are Brittany Jardine (50 freestyle, 16th, :24.63), Stefanie King (200 breaststroke, 16th, 2:27.02) and Jaime Sell (1650 free, 36th, 18:31.13).

NEW WILMINGTON -- Robin Thayer, a senior on the Westminster College women's basketball team from South Range High, needs 35 points to become the Titans' career leading scorer.
Thayer netted 22 points in Westminster's 71-61 win over Thiel College Wednesday to climb into the No. 2 spot with 1,151 points. Colleen Dion had 1,185 points from 1992-96.
Pitt plays12-game schedule
PITTSBURGH -- Pitt will carry its six-game winning streak into an Aug. 31 season-opener against Ohio University, one of the Panthers' seven home games in 2002.
Pitt plays a 12-game schedule that begins in August with the Ohio U. game and doesn't end until a Nov. 30 home game against West Virginia.
