Shot wounds man
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 33-year-old man was in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning after suffering a gunshot wound. City police found James Stanford Jr. bleeding from the mouth and chin lying on the floor inside the Forest City Food Market, 180 W. Indianola Ave. at about 9:50 a.m. Thursday. Stanford, address not reported, would not tell police where the shooting took place.
Fire in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN -- City fire officials estimate an electrical fire at 1814 Homewood Ave. caused about $15,000 worth of damage to the two-story home. Firefighters were called to the South Side home at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire started when there was a short circuit in electrical wiring in the home's basement. It burned through the living room floor, igniting upholstered furniture. The homeowner arrived as firefighters were extinguishing the fire.
Board OKs study funds
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners voted Thursday to spend $13,000 toward the cost of a feasibility study for an ecological restoration project being done on the Mahoning River by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Sentencing in slaying
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sentencing will be March 22 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for William Cartwright, 56, of West Chalmers Avenue, who pleaded guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter. The charge was reduced from murder in exchange for his plea. Police say Cartwright stabbed 36-year-old Shaheedah Burkley to death at her South Side home in February 2000.
Grants workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for a Feb. 6 workshop on grant-seeking for representatives of nonprofit organizations. The free workshop will be at 6:30 p.m. in the main public library meeting room, 305 Wick Ave. Call the main library reference department to make reservations.
Cocaine possession
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old East Side man faces a charge of possession of cocaine. Police were called to NABI Biomedical Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 5 p.m. Thursday. An inmate at the Mahoning County jail had told a deputy sheriff that a man there was driving a stolen car and was armed with a gun. The teen, of McGuffey Road, was arrested after walking away from officers. When police searched the teen, he dropped a small blue bag containing suspected cocaine.
Nursing home theft
AUSTINTOWN -- The case against a Warren woman suspected of stealing $73,384 from three nursing home residents has been sent to a Mahoning County grand jury. Janice Lawton, 40, of Kenmore Avenue, is charged with two felony counts of grand theft by deception. Police allege that Lawton, a former billing manager at Austinwoods Nursing Center, stole or misappropriated the money from three Austinwoods residents, ages 65, 82, and 91.
Theft from truck
AUSTINTOWN -- The front license plate and 70 to 80 gallons of diesel fuel were stolen Thursday night from a truck parked behind the Rebel Lounge, 5335 Seventy-six Drive. The driver told police he parked the truck about 7:30 p.m. Thursday and discovered the theft when he woke up at 6 a.m. today.
Bus driver threatened
AUSTINTOWN -- A 10-year-old fifth-grader from Austintown is accused of threatening his bus driver Wednesday afternoon. She overheard the boy saying that he and a classmate wanted to bring a shotgun to school and shoot her. Questioned by the driver, the boy said bringing a gun to school was "just a fantasy dream."
Guns stolen from truck
AUSTINTOWN -- Two semiautomatic pistols and their holsters were stolen from a pickup truck parked in the lot of a South Raccoon Road apartment building Thursday night. The 30-year-old owner told police he discovered the guns and other items missing from the rear seat of his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 Thursday morning.
Noise at The Mill
AUSTINTOWN -- A manager at The Mill, 1743 S. Raccoon Road, was summoned to appear in court on a noise complaint after nearby Kerrybrook Drive residents complained of loud music from the building early today.
