Board offers to testwell water for arsenic
BRACEVILLE -- Representatives of the Trumbull County Board of Health will be at the township hall here Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon to sign up residents wishing to have their wells tested for arsenic.
Well water at Vaughn Elementary School was recently found to exceed recommended levels of the element.
Cost for the test is $27.
Volunteers honored
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have recognized local Red Cross volunteers Marian and John Scott and Peter Orfanos for their work at the World Trade Center in New York City in the weeks after Sept. 11.
The Scotts helped feed workers at the scene of the disaster. Orfanos supervised Red Cross response centers near the site. They were each presented a plaque Wednesday.
Man posts bondin case involving body
NILES -- A Pratt Street man, accused of trying to remove a man's body from his home, has been released on bond.
Municipal Judge Thomas W. Townley reduced bond Wednesday for William F. Stadler, 43, who faces several charges. His trial is set for March 11.
Police say he failed to report the death of a man in his apartment over the weekend and tried to persuade another man to help him move the body.
Stadler's girlfriend, who authorities say participated in the plot, was in the city jail pending charges after her arrest by Niles police Wednesday night.
Counterfeiting charges
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted a Niles resident on charges of manufacturing and possessing counterfeit money.
Kingsley R. Mast, 36, of Cherry Avenue, is charged with counterfeiting $10 bills, the U.S. attorney's office in Cleveland said.
Traffic safety blitz
GIRARD -- The police department will conduct a traffic safety blitz Jan. 21 to 31 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Officers will focus on secondary roads -- Trumbull Avenue, Liberty Street and Church Hill Road -- looking for speed and seat belt violations.
Meeting moved
BROOKFIELD -- Instead of meeting last night, the board of education will meet next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. A public work session will precede the meeting at 5.
The board regularly meets the third Wednesday of the month.
Traficant questions
CLEVELAND -- The government has objected to a list of proposed jury questions U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., of Poland, D-17th, submitted for his upcoming racketeering trial.
The congressman submitted 20 questions, most of which deal with prospective jurors' religious and ethnic backgrounds and the religious and ethnic backgrounds of their parents and spouses.
"Any decision to strike a juror based on his or her nationality, ethnic heritage or religion would be in violation of the United States Constitution as interpreted by the United States Supreme Court," the government said.

Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has announced that anyone can search vehicle identification numbers to find out a particular vehicle's mileage and title status and whether it is a rebuilt salvage vehicle or former police vehicle.

Grenade launchers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police say four grenade launchers found by a hunter in the state game lands off Harlansburg Road in Scott Township have been turned over to the Army Explosives Unit at Fort Indian Town Gap in Harrisburg.
Police said the devices were found Monday.
