Girl Scout collectsvideos for hospitals
CORTLAND -- Maplewood High School senior Christen Clemson has presented Forum Health hospitals with a large collection of videos and tapes to benefit children.
Clemson has been a member of Girl Scout Troop 568 of the Lake to River Girl Scout Council for 11 years. She is receiving a Girl Scout Gold Award for the service project.
Collection boxes were placed at area churches and stores between July and November.
Videos and tapes will go to Tod Babies and Children's Hospital in Youngstown, along with Forum hospitals in four counties.
Pinewood derby
WARREN -- About 55 Cub Scouts will participate in the annual pinewood derby Sunday at Blessed Sacrament Church on North Road. The event begins at 12:30 p.m.
Tax money recovery
WARREN -- The city's new income tax administrator says tracking the amount of money owed the city through incorrect withholdings will be a slow process.
Thomas Gaffney said the income tax department, which he was hired to help turn around, will calculate the amounts owed as the information comes in.
"It's going to take a while," Gaffney said.
In some cases, the state and some private businesses did not deduct the 0.5 percent income tax increase voters approved in May.
Some were withholding at the 1.5 percent rate instead of at 2 percent.
The state has said it was not notified of the change.
Diplomas presented
McDONALD -- Diplomas will be presented to three World War II veterans who were unable to finish high school because they served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
The ceremony is at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the high school gymnasium during the break between the junior varsity and varsity basketball games.
A school board member will present diplomas to Edith Flickinger,171 Park Road, Leavittsburg, wife of the late William Flickinger, whose diploma will show that he graduated in June 1944; Albert F. Wilkes Jr., 208 S. Roanoke Ave., Austintown, June 1944, and Michael Joseph Roseman, 2239 Renwick Drive, Poland, June 1946.
YWCA open house
WARREN -- Hot FM 101 radio personalities will visit the YWCA on Park Avenue during an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Members and nonmembers are invited to participate in free classes throughout the day, including aerobics, aquacise and those in the coed and women's only fitness studio.
The open house is in conjunction with registration for the winter session, which begins Jan. 21.
Four three-month adult fitness packages will be given away and will include a one-year basic membership and some free classes. A raffle is also being held for a six-month family package.
The Goodtimers, YWCA's senior group, will have a bake sale, and Wil Harris, local artist and instructor, will display some work. Free back and neck massages, along with mini facials, will be offered.
Refreshments will be provided by Saratoga Restaurant, and the public is invited to bring their inflatable rafts and chairs and float in the pool while watching Walt Disney's "Peter Pan."
Art in Yellow Pages
WARREN -- Young artists from Trumbull County can put their creative talents to work and have their art displayed in the 2002 Trumbull County Sprint Yellow Pages.
Creative Kids, a community program developed by Sprint six years ago, encourages kids in grades 1 through 3 to submit artwork through their school art classes.
They're asked to create a scene from a favorite art book, depict themselves as a book character or illustrate their favorite spot to read or favorite person to read with.
Three winners will be selected randomly. All other drawings will be published throughout the book as space permits.
Suspended from school
AUSTINTOWN -- A 15-year-old eighth-grader was suspended from Frank Ohl Middle School for five days after suspected marijuana was found in his shoe.
Pupils told administrators the boy had the substance. A pipe also was found in his shoe.
