Brothers face charge
BROOKFIELD -- Two Sharon brothers will return to court Thursday, charged with breaking and entering. They are accused of breaking into a church early Monday.
Township police Chief Dan Faustino said Nathan W. Cook, 20, of South Irvine Avenue, and Patrick M. Cook, 19, of Logan Avenue, were arrested Monday morning and remain in the Trumbull County Jail.
Police received a call about 2:15 a.m. Monday of people trying to break into Living Word Church, Syme Street. When police arrived, they could hear voices inside. They called Sharon police for assistance and surrounded the building.
The two men came out when police said they would send in Sharpsville's police dog.
Charged in forgery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police accused a Beech Street woman of passing a fake $100 bill at a Crossroads Food Mart in Union Township.
Fawn M. Cox, 22, faces charges of forgery and theft by deception. Police said the fake money was given to a store clerk at 8 p.m. Saturday. Cox was arraigned by District Justice J.V. Lamb and released on $5,000 bond.
Prostitution arrest
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police charged a city woman with prostitution. Dorothy Spearman, 33, of East Lutton Street was arrested at 3:45 a.m. Monday. Police said an undercover officer was solicited for oral sex near the Rite Aid on East Washington Street. Spearman was released without bond after her arrest.
Man turns himself in
SHARON, Pa. -- Jason L. Jackson, 25, of Fruit Avenue, Farrell, turned himself in at the Sharon police station after learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest on a charge of unlawful delivery of marijuana.
Police said the warrant was issued by the state attorney general's office and was a Mercer County Drug Task Force case. No details were immediately available. Jackson surrendered at 10 a.m. Monday and was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo, who freed him on his own recognizance.
Plan to hire teachers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City school board members expect to hire five new teachers when they meet Wednesday. Lynn Padice, school board president, said they expect to fill positions left vacant by teachers who took an early-retirement incentive the board offered earlier this year. Board members met Monday night to set the agenda for the meeting. Wednesday's meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. in the administrative center off of Croton Avenue.
Increase in tuition
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- Mercyhurst College is increasing tuition, room and board by 5.6 percent for the 2002-03 school year. The cost to attend the school will be $21,849.
The increase of $1,165 is necessary for technology improvements, salary increases, financial aid and opening a new academic building, the $7.3 million Audrey Hirt Academic Center, said Mercyhurst President William Garvey.
Mercyhurst increased tuition, room and board by $980, or 5 percent, for 2001-02.
Pipe bomb detonated
NORTH LIMA -- A pipe bomb found on Lipply Road near Pine Lake was detonated at the site by members of the Youngstown Police Department bomb squad, said Carl N. Frost, Beaver police chief.
A man taking a water sample from the lake for his daughter's science project Sunday afternoon saw the device and called police, Frost said. There's no indication how long the pipe bomb had been near the lake, he said.
Officials identify body
STRUTHERS -- The body of a man found Saturday in the Mahoning River has been identified by the Mahoning County Coroner's Office as Gregory P. Ahmer, 47, of Overlook Boulevard, Struthers. Ahmer's cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
