Trustees elect officers
CANFIELD -- Joyce Brooks has been elected president and Paul Good vice president of the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center board of trustees. Marie Dockry had most recently been president and Brooks vice president of the board. David Engler also was sworn in as a new board member earlier this week.
The board approved a general fund budget with revenues of $9,446,290 and expenditures of $8,126,950 for the fiscal year that begins July 1. This compares with projected revenues of $8,988,562 and expenditures of $8,164,038 for this year that ends June 30. Rising property values account for much of the revenue increase; and expenditures are being reduced by two teachers' salaries being switched from that fund to a federal grant and one teacher having been laid off, said Treasurer Jane Rich.
Woman faces charge
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Canfield woman this morning who they say pawned guns and a diamond ring belonging to her ex-husband and his mother.
Suzanne Estep, of Dartmouth Street, Canfield, was charged with receiving stolen property. Police said Estep took two guns and a diamond ring from the Canfield home of her ex-husband's family while living in the home last year. Detective Sgt. Frank Tomasino found the guns at Austintown Pawn Inc. on Mahoning Avenue, while the ring was found at Ace Diamond & amp; Jewelry Brokers Inc. on Market Street in Boardman. Estep received $375 for the ring and a total of $60 for the guns.
Items stolen from cars
AUSTINTOWN -- A thief took a cellular phone, a CD player, and 20 CDs on Thursday evening from two cars parked at Wedgewood Lanes on South Raccoon Road. The thief also broke into two other cars in the parking lot. However, no items were found missing from those cars.
Police said the thief used a lock puller to enter the cars between 6-10 p.m.
Police also received a report around 11 a.m. Thursday that a car was stolen from the parking lot of Steel City Manufacturing on North Meridian Road.
